The Moscow title was defended by Spartak Moscow (taking third place in the end), and Moscow Lokomotiv became the champion for the 1st round before the tournament (for the third time). CSKA took second place. Thus, only Moscow clubs won all championship medals (the previous time this happened in 2006 ).

In December 2016, the head coach of the Russian national team Stanislav Cherchesov and the director general of the RFU Alexander Alayev [2] sent a request to the RFPL president Sergei Pryadkin to end the Russian football championship on May 12–13, 2018, so that the team would have more time to prepare for World Championship [3] [4] . At the general meeting of the Premier League on January 25, 2017, the start and end dates of the Russian Championship were preliminarily approved on July 16, 2017 and May 13, 2018, respectively [5] [6] .

The first registration period of the season will last from June 9 to August 31, 2017, the second - from January 23 to February 22, 2018 [7] .

Rules

Format

The Russian Football Championship 2017/2018 is held on the principle of "each with each" in two circles in its own field and the opponent's field. Club teams that took 15th and 16th places in the final tournament table of the 2017/2018 championship are eliminated in the FNL Championship after following the procedure for eliminating clubs from the Premier League . The teams that took 13th and 14th places play two transitional matches (at home and away) with the teams of the FNL Championship 2017/2018 , who took fourth and third places, respectively.

The winner of the transitional matches is the team that will score the most goals in two matches, and if the goals are equal, the team that will score the most goals in a foreign field. If the teams score an equal number of goals in their own and foreign fields, then after the second match two additional halves of 15 minutes each without a break are assigned. If both teams score an equal number of goals during extra time , then the winner will be the team playing away games in this match. If the goals are not scored during the extra time, the winner will be determined by strikes from the 11-meter mark in accordance with the rules of the game .

Teams that took first and second places in the FNL Championship 2017/2018 , as well as winners of butt games, are entitled to speak in the 2018/2019 season in the Russian Championship . Teams that lose following the transitional matches of the 2017/2018 season will play in the FNL Championship 2018/2019 .

Legionnaire Limit

As part of one team at the same time on the field can be no more than 6 foreign players.

Clause 17.3. In case of equality of points for two or more teams, the places of teams in the Championship table are determined:

- according to the results of the games among themselves (the number of points, the number of victories, the difference of goals scored and conceded, the number of goals scored, the number of goals scored in a foreign field);
- by the greatest number of victories in all matches;
- according to the best difference of goals scored and conceded goals in all matches;
- by the largest number of goals scored in all matches;
- by the largest number of goals scored on foreign fields in all matches.

Clause 17.4. With the absolute equality of all these indicators, the places of teams in the final standings are determined in an additional match (tournament) between these teams.

Notes:
  1. ↑ The team that took 4th place in the Russian championship receives the right to play in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League 2018/2019 instead of FC Tosno - the winner of the Russian Football Cup 2017/2018 , who did not receive a license to compete in European competitions.

Thus, according to the results of the play-offs, it was assumed that the Amkar team will keep their residence in the Premier League for the 2018/19 season. However, in June 2018, it became known that the club did not receive an RFU license and would be disbanded due to a sharp reduction in funding. As a result, it was decided that Anji would retain membership in the Premier League.

“ Tambov ” could not break into the elite division and spent the next season in the FNL. Yenisei , having beaten Anji in the butt games, took part in the country's main league for the first time in its history, replacing the losing team (due to the problems of Amkar and Yenisei, and Anji ended up in the Premier League together).
