Biography
Born in Lombardy . Brother mathematician Luigi Cremona . In 1848-1849 he studied at the drawing school under the guidance of Cesare Ferreri.
In 1852-1859 he lived in Venice. He studied painting at the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts in Giovanni Carnovalli . As a student, he was amazed at the skill of Venetian painters of the 15th — 16th centuries, more than the artists of the Academy’s traditionalists. He was fascinated by the richness of colors and the tendency to feather the lines that distinguish some of the paintings of the late Titian .
In Venice, T. Cremona received a number of awards in student work contests, and a three-year scholarship of the government of Austria-Hungary.
In 1859, in order to avoid being drafted into the Austrian military service, the artist moved to Milan , where he became the founder and active member of the scapillatory movement.
He exhibited at the annual exhibition at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan while still a student at the Venice Academy of Arts (Sokolniki in the 16th century). Later he entered the painting school of the Academy, studied under G. Bertini. He continued to study the skills of past artists ( Titian , Rembrandt , J. Crespi , F. Guardi , J. Piazzetta, and others) began to practice portraits, wrote historical and romantic paintings (Marco Polo at the Court of the Great Khan, Visiting the Grave of Romeo and Juliet, scenes from Goethe's Faust).
After graduation, driven by economic difficulties, engaged in political caricature, collaborated with various comic editions of Italy. He was engaged in the illustration of newspaper publications, fashion magazines, lithography, created miniatures on ivory, etc.
In 1874 he became an honorary member of the Brera Academy in Milan, he worked as director of the Pavia Art School.
He died as a result of intestinal intoxication with oil pigments because of his habit of mixing paints, which he did himself and tested directly on his hand.
Creativity
Tranquillo Cremona, close to impressionism , had a wonderful sense of color. Characteristic features of his canvases are the search for soft and air effects in painting, achieved by adding shadows along the contours. It is worth noting that although Cremona showed his intolerance of “fashion” in the search for symbolism , his paintings, in which unfinished, feathered figures were not always recognizable (which was caused by the effort to merge the objects depicted with the environment), later had a tangible impact on the work of the sculptor Medardo Rosso and affected the initial settings of the futurist Umberto Boccioni - one of the most prominent representatives of futurism.
