The early years

Scientific Achievements

Nisbeth's most significant work is the article " Telling more than we can know: Verbal reports on mental processes " (1977), co-authored with [4] . The article for the first time consistently sets forth the arguments obtained empirically, showing that many thought processes responsible for preferences and emotions are inaccessible to the consciousness of the individual [4] . The authors of the article argue that through introspection an individual can only understand "what he thinks about how he thinks," but not how he thinks in reality [5] . Not all cognitive psychologists agree with this statement. In particular, an alternative opinion was expressed by and Simon Herbert [6] .

In his book The Geography of Thought (2003), Nisbett analyzes differences in the thinking processes of different peoples. In particular, he claims that Westerners and Asians thought differently for millennia, and these differences can be determined by scientific methods.

In his book Intelligence and How to Get It: Why Schools and Cultures Count (2010), Nisbeth argues that environmental factors and the school are more important for the development of intelligence than genetic factors. The book received numerous positive reviews both in the press and in the scientific community [7] . So psychologist Daniel Oscherson of the University of Pennsylvania wrote that "the book contains a meaningful analysis of factors that determine the level of development of intelligence." On the other hand, critical comments were also made regarding the fact that the author did not pay enough attention to genetic factors that determine both individual and group differences in the development of intelligence [8] .

Together with the famous social psychologist introduced the concept of the phenomenon of , which consists in the difference in the explanation of what is happening from the participants or observers of a certain event.
