The High Command of the Gendarmerie or the Turkish Gendarmerie ( Tur. Jandarma Genel Komutanlığı ) is a branch of the Turkish armed forces responsible for maintaining public order in areas outside the jurisdiction of the police forces (usually in rural areas), ensuring internal security and border control, and also performs some of the special duties prescribed in certain laws and regulations. The gendarmerie is essentially a military armed law enforcement organization. The gendarmerie works in contact with the Askeri İnzibat service, maintains order in the ranks of the armed forces. It consists of two special teams - Jandarma Özel Harekat Komutanlığı and Jandarma Özel Asayiş Komutanlığı .
The High Command of the Gendarmerie, being part of the Turkish Armed Forces, is subordinate to the General Staff in matters relating to the training and education of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior in matters of fulfilling the duty to protect security and public order. The commander of the gendarmerie reports to the Minister of the Interior.

History
The gendarmerie comes from the militarized law enforcement organization Subashi (later Zaptiye) of the Ottoman Empire , which was responsible for security and safety. Also in the medieval empire of the Seljukids, the Shurt organization existed.
