History
The Great Khan's Mosque is located in the Palace Square east of the northern gate. This is one of the largest mosques in Crimea and the first of the buildings of the Khan's palace. [2] The mosque was built in 1532 by Sahib I Gerai , in the XVII century the mosque bore his name. [2]
The mosque is massive, with a lancet arcade [3] on the bottom and majolica inserts [4] on the walls. The roof of the mosque is four-pitched and covered with red tiles. Initially, the roof was covered with domes. [2]
The main entrance to the mosque is located on the side of the Churuk-Su river. The facade on this side was previously trimmed with marble. Near the eastern wall of the mosque is located Abdesthane (a place for performing ritual ablutions - abdesta) with a shadirvan (fountain). The walls depict several calligraphic inscriptions in Arabic (quotes from the Qur'an ) that appeared in the 18th century. The inscriptions are made in black in green cartouches. Also among the calligraphic inscriptions on the wall there is a mention of the name of Kyrym Geray , who repaired and decorated the mosque: "May the blessings of His Highness Kirim Geray Khan be blessed."
The mosque has two ten-sided minarets with pointed roofs, crowned with bronze alems (crescents). The height of the minarets is 28 meters. Upstairs are stone spiral staircases inside the minarets. Minaret towers are built of hewn stone slabs, fastened together by lead inserts. [four]
In 1736, the mosque suffered a fire. It was restored during the reign of Khan Selyamet II Geray master Omer. In the 1750s, Arslan Gerai founded a madrasah in the courtyard of the mosque, which has not survived to this day. In Soviet times, the mosque was closed. In its upper part there was an exposition of the museum department of archeology, and in the lower part there was a lapidarium (a repository of architectural details, fragments, stones with inscriptions and images). [5] Today, the mosque is open to believers.
