Appearance
Xterra appeared in North America in 1999, and was sold using the slogan “Everything you need, nothing more” ( English Everything you need, nothing you don't ).
The Xterra was not Nissan's first compact SUV. Nissan Mistral and Nissan Rasheen were available in Japan, and Terrano , a two-door SUV, was also produced and sold in Europe from 1993 to 2006.
Nissan licensed the Xterra name from the Hawaiian TEAM Unlimited LLC team for an unknown amount of money. TEAM Unlimited owns the rights to the Xterra Triathlon, as well as the pre-existing Lifeguard Challenges . This allowed TEAM Unlimited to strengthen the Xterra brand.
In August 2015, Nissan announced the cessation of production of the model, the last cars were sold in the autumn of the same year. Nissan has no plans to create a direct replacement or successor to the model [3] [4] .
First Generation
1999-2001
During the first two years of production, there were two trim levels: the Xterra XE and Xterra SE.
Xterra received a 143-horsepower (105 kW) in-line four-cylinder engine KA24DE , a five-speed manual gearbox, as well as steel wheels. The car lacked guides and a roof rack.
XE models had several option packages, including a 170-liter 3.3-liter Nissan VG 33E engine and a V6 configuration with a five-speed manual gearbox or an automatic four-speed gearbox, as well as options such as a boot, steps, sunroof and carpet . The SE models had standard equipment that was optional on the XE.
Canadian models from 1999 to 2004 were limited only to the V6 engine (VG33E) and are only available with plug-in four-wheel drive.
2002-2004
The Xterra was updated in 2002 with a new dashboard and center console, an improved powertrain, and a new style of the front end. The power of the 3.3-liter VG33E has been increased to 180 liters. from. (134 kW) and 210 liters. from. (157 kW) for the supercharged version. Torque was 334 Nm with automatic transmission installed and 313 Nm with a five-speed manual.
In 2003, features such as side airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system became available. The audio system was updated, four speakers and a subwoofer appeared. Although 2004 was the last year for this generation, some models were released back in January 2005.
Second Generation
2005—2015
Presented at the New York International Auto Show in April 2004, the Xterra was ported in 2005 to the Nissan F-Alpha platform used by Frontier . The new generation has become larger in size than its predecessor. Using Nissan's variable valve timing system, 261 liters of power were removed from the 4.0-liter VQ40DE engine. from. (192 kW) [5] [6] [7] .
Improvements in 2009 and 2014
In 2009, facelift occurred with the simultaneous appearance of a large number of available options and body colors, leather seats on SE models, as well as a roof-mounted light on off-road models. In 2012, US car production was moved from Smyrna, Tennessee, to Canton, Mississippi.
In 2014, the following changes occurred: the navigation system was updated, the possibility of voice recognition appeared, new 16-inch alloy wheels began to be installed, heating of the front fabric seats on the PRO-4X was added. Early US models include the X, S, and PRO-4X, with a choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, as well as a choice of plug-in four-wheel drive [8] [9] .
Production End
The Xterra was discontinued in the U.S. after the 2015 model year. Poor fuel economy, reduced sales and costly upgrades aimed at safety and emission reduction were cited as the reasons for this [10] [11] .
Manufacturing outside North America
All Nissan-branded Xterra cars manufactured outside the US were released to Brazil until 2007 (Nissan completely stopped Brazilian production in 2007). It has been manufactured under license from Pars Khodro in Iran as Nissan Roniz , and in China by Zhengzhou Nissan as Nissan Paladin since 2003. The Paladin has the same chassis and chassis as the first-generation Nissan Xterra, and the 2.4-liter KA24DE engine is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The front of the car was taken from a local pickup truck.
Dongfeng released a Chinese version of Xterra called Oting . It is based on the first generation Xterra. [12]
