History

Some of the singers starred in films and their music played a prominent role in the development of cinema in China . They dominated the Chinese pop music industry in the 1930s and 1940s, which was concentrated in Shanghai, and often sang songs in the genre known as shidai-chu ( Chinese 時代 曲 ) [1] . The first, in the 1930s, became known Zhou Xuan , Gong Qushia , Yao Li and Bai Hong . In the 1940s, Bai Guang , Li Xianlan , Wu Yingyin also became popular. So, these seven became one of the outstanding performers of their period.

From 1937 to 1945, Shanghai was captured by the Japanese. Li Xianglan , being a Japanese woman, became known during this period, although no one knew about her origin at that time. After 1949, a large migration of people from Shanghai to Hong Kong began, and the Chinese Communist Party also condemned Shanghai popular music, calling it “yellow music” ( Chinese 黃色 歌曲 ). The cinema and music industry moved to Hong Kong in the 1940s, and in the 1950s, Hong Kong became the center of the entertainment industry [1] . While some of the seven singers continued to perform for many years, Zhou Xuan died in 1957 and Bai Guang stopped recording in 1959.
