Biography
Nikolai Sørensen was born in the capital of Denmark in 1989. From childhood, he was fond of figure skating and specifically dancing on ice. His first partner was Anna Thomsen, with whom he made his debut at the junior stages of the Grand Prix and performed at the Junior World Championships in Ljubljana , where they managed to reach the final part of the championship. In 2007, however, the couple broke up.
Sørensen paired up with Barbara Heroldova. This couple performed at the junior stages of the Grand Prix, won the championship of their country among juniors and performed in Sofia at the world junior championship . Where Danish dancers confidently went to the final of the championship. However, at the end of the season, the dance couple broke up.
Since 2009, Sørensen paired with Canadian figure skater Caitlin Hood and they began to play for a European country. With her, he first became the champion of Denmark. In January, Danish dancers made their debut at the European Championships in Tallinn , where they failed to qualify for the final part of the championship. Then the World Junior Championship followed in The Hague , where athletes from Denmark finished in the middle of the top ten. In March, the skaters made their debut at the world championship in Turin , but here they also did not qualify for the final part. The following season, the couple performed at a number of tournaments and the world championship in Moscow , where the athletes failed to qualify. After that, the couple broke up.
Sørensen began to look for a new partner, and in the end stood in a pair with Laurence Fournier. In the fall of 2013, the couple made a good debut at a number of international tournaments. They earned a technical minimum for participation in the championships. They became the country's champions and in January the couple made their debut in Budapest at the European Championship . To the surprise of many experts, the couple confidently entered the final part of the championship. At the end of March, the couple also made their debut at the world championship in Saitam , where the Danes did not reach the final part.
The next season, Danish dancers began in Canada in September in Lawrence's hometown at the Autumn Classic tournament , where they finished in third place [2] . At the tournament in Graz they were already the second. At the national championships, the pair became the country's champions for the second time. In January 2015, at the European Championships, Danish skaters finished in the top ten and for the first time won the right for Denmark in the dance for the next year to declare two pairs. Unfortunately, the Danes did not have a second pair with the required technical minimum level. In late March, in Shanghai at the world championships, Danish athletes again surprised everyone, they fought on equal terms for a place in the top ten and they lacked a little luck when they finished in eleventh place.
The couple started the new season in Salt Lake City , where they finished in second place at the US International Figure Skating Classic tournament [3] . In October, at the Finlandia Trophy, the Danes finished in third place [4] . In late October, Danish skaters made their debut in the Grand Prix series at the Canadian stage [5] . In mid-November, they performed at the French Grand Prix stage , where after a short program they took fifth place [6] . However, the competition itself was not completed due to the terrorist threat. At the end of January 2016, Danish athletes performed at the European Championships in Bratislava , where, like a year ago, they took ninth place. Two months later, at the World Championships in Boston, athletes finished outside the top dozen.
The Danish couple began the new pre-Olympic season in early October, skaters performed in Montreal at the Autumn Classic tournament , where they finished with a bronze medal [7] . This was followed by the Finlandia Trophy tournament , where they were fourth [8] . At the end of October, they performed at the stages of the Grand Prix at the Canadian [9] and Russian stages [10] . At both stages, the Danes took seventh place. At the end of January 2017, athletes took part in the European Championship in Ostrava . Here, all their previous sports achievements were improved, and the skaters themselves finished seventh [11] . At the end of March, Danish skaters performed at the World Championships in Helsinki , where they performed successfully, were able to confidently qualify for the next Olympic Games and confidently passed into the free program [12] . At the same time, they slightly improved their previous achievements in the short program.
However, in the summer, the IOC decided not to change partner sports nationality and the couple will not be able to take part in the games [13] . In September, a Danish couple began the Olympic season in Salt Lake City , where they finished next to the podium at the US International Figure Skating Classic tournament [14] . A week later, the dancers performed in Canada , where they did not perform very well at the Autumn Classic International tournament, and finished at the end of the tournament table [15] . In early October, in Espoo , on the Trophy of Finland , the couple already finished with bronze [16] . A month later, the skaters took part in the Japanese stage of the Grand Prix series , where they finished in the middle of the tournament table [17] . At the same time, they improved their previous achievements in total and free dance. In mid-January, the couple performed at the continental championship in Moscow where they again managed to finish in the top ten. Also, the athletes were able to slightly improve again their previous achievements in total and free dance. They also managed to become champions of the country.
