Grigory Ivanovich Sherstnev was born on August 6, 1898 in Orel.

Military Service

World War I and Civil War

In February 1917 he was drafted into the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army and sent to the 90th reserve regiment stationed in Saratov , and in June he was transferred to the Bashkadyklar 185th Infantry Regiment ( South-Western Front ), where he served as department commander, assistant platoon commander and junior non-commissioned officer .

In February 1918, he joined the ranks of the Red Army and was directed by an arrow in the railway guard of the Eagle. In July, he was appointed a platoon commander of a guard detachment there. From October he took part in hostilities as part of the 105th Infantry Regiment ( 35th Infantry Division , Eastern Front ). In December 1919 he was sent to study in Moscow for instructor courses, after which in March 1920 he was sent to Poltava , where he served as assistant company commander in the 226th battalion and the 550th rifle regiment.

Interwar Time

Since February 1921, Sherstnev served in the 59th Red Banner Rifle Regiment stationed in Pereyaslavl as assistant commander and company commander. In August of the same year he was sent to study for repeated courses of the command personnel stationed in Kharkov , after which in January 1922 he was sent to the 20th infantry regiment, where he served as platoon, company and battalion commander.

In October 1924, he was again sent to study for repeated courses of the command personnel stationed in Kharkov, which he graduated in August 1925 .

In November 1928, Sherstnev was sent to study at the Military-Political Academy of the Red Army , but in June 1929 he was transferred to the MV Frunze Military Academy , after which in May 1932 he was sent to the Minsk fortified area ( Belorussian Military District ), where he served as chief of the 1st part and chief of staff of a fortified area.

In November 1936, he was appointed to the post of chief of staff of the 2nd rifle division , in November 1938 - to the post of lecturer in the general tactics department of the Military Academy named after MV Frunze, and in October 1939 - to the post of chief of the Odessa Infantry School . In the same year he was elected a deputy of the Odessa City Council [1] .

Great Patriotic War

Since the beginning of the war Sherstnev commanded a consolidated detachment of cadets on the South-Western Front .

In December 1941, he was appointed commander of the 28th rifle division , which took part in the Toropetsko-Kholm offensive operation , in September 1942 - deputy chief of staff of the Kalinin front , and in November - deputy commander of the 22nd army which led defensive fighting south-west of Rzhev , in March 1943 took part in the Rzhev-Vyazma offensive operation , and in April led defensive fighting along the eastern bank of the Lovat on the Kholm - Vel some kind of bows .

On August 17, he was appointed commander of the 90th rifle corps , in June 1944, he was appointed deputy commander of the 3rd Shock Army , and on August 29 he commanded the 79th rifle corps , which on October 20 reached the approaches to Saldus , having carried out the blockade of the enemy troops on the Kurland Peninsula . On October 23rd, Major General Grigori Ivanovich Sherstnev hit a mine and died from his wounds.
