Biography

Born and raised in Moscow in a family of mathematicians. For the first time I went on a folklore expedition to the Kargopol district of the Arkhangelsk region in 1997 as a student practice after finishing the first year. In 2001, he graduated from the Department of Philology at the Faculty of History and Philology of the Russian State Humanitarian University (RSUH) (the supervisor is Prof. Andrei Moroz). After graduation, he entered graduate school at the Center for Historical Anthropology. Mark Blok (RGGU) in 2005 defended his dissertation “Feast in the rites and ritual folklore of the Russian North (based on the material of funeral and memorial rites and lamentations)” (scientific adviser is Prof. Andrei Toporkov ).

Since 2005, a researcher at the State Republican Center for Russian Folklore . In May 2010, he created and headed the department of modern folklore in the structure of the SRRC. The department organized the scientific conference “Folklore of the 21st Century” annually (the collection of scientific articles of the same name was published as a result of the first scientific conference), conducted anthropological field studies in small towns of Vladimir ( Murom , Melenki ) and Kostroma Oblast ( Galich , Kologriv , Manturovo , Sharya ). In February 2014, the department was disbanded in connection with the conversion of the SRRC.

Having started cooperation with the Strelka Institute in 2012, he became one of the pioneers of applied urban anthropology in Russia. In 2014, he became the head of the Strelka Design Bureau for Urban Anthropology, developing and conducting applied research aimed at identifying the needs and requirements of various categories of users of the urban environment [1] .

From 1997 to 2017, he took part in more than 50 folklore and anthropological expeditions [2] , including as the organizer and leader of some of them. Since 2013, he has made numerous trips to Russian cities as part of research and educational projects of Strelka Design Bureau [3] [4] [5] [6] .

Member of scientific societies International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (SIEF) (since 2011), The International Society for Contemporary Legend Research (since 2012), The Society for Applied Anthropology (since 2014).

Scientific Interests

It is distinguished by a variety of scientific interests, which are reflected in approximately 100 scientific publications [7] . Initially, he dealt mainly with topics related to Russian peasant folklore and ritual culture, paying special attention to feast practices [8] [9] and funeral laments [10] [11] [12] , to which his dissertation research was devoted.

In the mid-2000s, he began to engage more actively in the study of modern urban folklore. Among the topics that scientific works of this time are devoted to, contemporary urban legends [13] [14] , various forms of Internet folklore [15] [16] , and post-Soviet political jokes [17] [18] stand out.

In the 2010s Mikhail Alekseevsky is gradually moving away from the study of folklore, paying more attention to problems concerning the broader issues of urban anthropology [19] [20] [21] [22] . In his spare time from scientific studies, he is actively engaged in the popularization of humanitarian knowledge, in particular, he records video lectures for the Post-Science project [23] [24] [25] . In December 2018, at the educational project "Radio Arzamas" a lecture course by Mikhail Alekseevsky on contemporary folklore "Why do we need memes, horror stories and jokes" [26]
