Extension of the Trans-Siberian Railway to Hokkaido

Extending the Trans-Siberian Railway to Hokkaido is a project known in Japan as the Eurasian Railway Crossing Plan ( Japanese ユ ー ラ シ ア 横断 鉄 道 計画 ), which envisages the extension of the Trans-Siberian Railway to Sakhalin , and from there through Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Hokkaido Wakkanaya with the aim of boosting tourism and trade flows. The project is being promoted by the Japanese consulting firm “Preparatory Organizing Committee for the Internationalization of the Trans-Siberian Railway” ( Japanese. シ ベ リ アア Implementation of the plan requires the construction of transport crossings (in the form of bridges or tunnels) from the mainland to Sakhalin through the Tatar Strait and from Sakhalin to Hokkaido through the Laperuza Strait . Currently being studied by Japanese companies and the Japanese government [1] . The project idea is also supported by Russia, which first announced it on October 3, 2016 [2] , and then repeated at the December Russian-Japanese summit in 2016 [3] , and is included in the list of 18 priority projects of the Ministry of Development of the Far East [4] . Estimated value is a trillion yen. On December 16, the project was proposed by Russian Railways [5] .
