History
The bronze monument was created in 1910 by a German sculptor, a teacher of the sculpture department at the Konigsberg Academy of Arts , Stanislav Kauer . In addition to the monument to Schiller, the author of Cauer owns a number of other works in the city: sculptures " Nymph ", "Mother and Child", the Putty Fountain , reliefs on the facade of the building of the police presidium, and others.
It is not known why the monument dedicated to Friedrich Schiller , who did not live in the city, was erected in Königsberg. According to one version, the opening of the monument was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Königsberg City Theater ( German: Stadttheater Königsberg ), which opened in 1810 with Schiller's production of " William Tell " [1] .
In 1934, the monument, originally erected at the City Theater, was moved to the square in front of the New Theater ( German: Neues Schauspielhaus ) [2] .
The monument suffered from shell splinters during aerial raids in 1944 , but successfully survived the storming of the city by Soviet troops in 1945 . According to legend, during the assault on the monument, an inscription was made in Russian: “Do not shoot! This is yours! ” [3] .
After the Second World War , in the mid-50s, the monument was restored [4] . On the pedestal was added an inscription in Russian, as well as the years of Schiller's life.
