Biography
Vilner was born in Vienna in 1859. He received a musical and legal education (the latter - at the University of Vienna ). At first he composed music, then switched to composing a libretto for the performances of the Vienna State Opera . One of Vilner's libretto became the basis of Johann Strauss 's unsuccessful operetta “The Goddess of Reason” ( Die Göttin der Vernunft , 1897); later revised version of the same play turned into Franz Lehars operetta “ Count of Luxembourg ” (1909). The young librettist gained fame after staging Leo Fall 's operetta The Princess of Dollars (1907, text together with Fritz Grünbaum). Further, Vilner worked a lot with Franz Lehar, Leo Fall, Edmund Eisler and other Viennese composers, and also wrote the libretto of the opera Giacomo Puccini “The Swallow ” (1917).
