The first information about Franziskaner beer dates back to 1363, when the brewer Seidel Vaterstetter, the owner of a brewery located on a street in Munich, which also houses the Franciscan monastery, is mentioned [1] . Due to its proximity to the Franciscan monastery, the brewery and beer were called Franziskaner.

In 1841, the brewery was acquired by Augustin Digelmeyer, the son-in-law of the famous brewer Gabriel Digelmeyer, who, since 1807, owned the Spaten Broi Munich brewery. In 1858, Joseph Sidelmeyer, son of Gabriel Sidelmeier, becomes the co-owner of Franciscan Brau, and in 1861 the brewery completely becomes his property after he bought the affairs of Augustine Digelmeyer.

In 1872, the brewery participated in the Oktoberfest with amber beer Ur-Märzen, a new style is born - the March beer . In 1909, Gabriel Sidelmeier III, the son of Joseph Sidelmeier, transforms the brewery into the property of the family-owned company Joseph Sedlmayr Zum Franziskanerkeller (Leistbräu) AG. In 1922, the company merged with Spaten bräu, which also belongs to the Siedelmeier family. The combined company was named Gabriel und Joseph Sedlmayr Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG.

In 1935, the Munich artist Ludwig Holvain created the Franciscaner beer logo and beer sign, which are still used today - an image of a Franciscan monk with a glass of white beer.

Today, the Franziskaner is brewed and bottled in one of the most modern breweries in the world. At the beginning of the new millennium, the brand is one of the leaders in the Weissbier style market and ranks third in sales among wheat beer brands in the world. During 2002/2003, the brewery increased sales and exceeded 1 million hectoliters per year.
