Overview
The rifle uses a patented mechanism for the removal of powder gases, which operates in two stages and thereby contrasts with the direct exhaust system in the AR-15. The tap is controlled by a four-position controller. Several key parts - the gas piston with a short stroke, the gas regulator and the bolt group - are chromed. Instead of the gas key, the AR-15 has a built-in protrusion in the shutter. The arrester is similar to the arrester AC-556 and Mini-14GB [3] .
In the assembly of the SR-556 rifle, parts of the production of Troy Industries (a handle with a rail mount ), Samson (a mechanical sight), Hogue (a rubberized pistol grip) and Magpul (three magazines with 30 rounds) were used. Modification SR-556SC uses three 10-round magazine, does not have a flash suppressor or folding butt, but in states with strict legislative restrictions on the use of assault rifles is quite common. The length of the chrome barrel - 409 mm, six grooves, designed for right-handed people. Twist 1: 230 mm [2] .
Since August 2010, the rifle has been manufactured not only for standard 5.56 x 45 cartridges, but also for 6.8 mm Remington SPC cartridges [4] .

Ruger AR-556
On September 29, 2014, the company introduced the AR-556 sports rifle with direct exhaust of powder gases and a sight similar to the Magpul BUIS. The rifle is not inferior in effectiveness to Smith & Wesson M & P15 .
Criticism
The SR-556 rifle was criticized for its unreasonably high price (up to 2 thousand US dollars) and a sophisticated control system compared to the cheap Smith & Wesson M&P rifles. The SR-556 was not sufficiently dustproof and did not have a front handle, and was also too heavy. After a series of recommendations, Ruger developed a lighter and cheaper modification of the SR-556E [5] .
