Ljubljana Zoo is a 19.6 hectare zoo in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana . It is the national zoo of Slovenia, open year-round.

The zoo is located on the southern slope of Rozhnik Hill, in a natural environment among forests and meadows, about a 20-minute walk from the city center. Due to the location of Ljubljana at the intersection of the Alps , the Central Danube Lowland , the Mediterranean and the Dinar Highlands , the zoo has a total of 500 animals of 119 species (excluding insects) [1] .

History
Ljubljana Zoo was founded on March 10, 1949 by order of the Ljubljana City Council. Initially, it was located in the city center, in 1951 it was moved to its current location [2] .
In 2008, it was announced the beginning of the reconstruction of the zoo, which was planned to be completed by 2016. In 2009, a new group of Saymiri monkeys arrived at the zoo, where a new aviary was already prepared for them. In the same year, alpacas and small pandas appeared in the zoo. At the end of 2009, the construction of a new aviary for pinnipeds began, and in 2013, three California sea lions were brought to the zoo. In 2010, both Amur tigers living in the zoo died of old age. Since 1996, two lions , a male and a female, donated by the Karlsruhe Zoo, also lived in the zoo. The male died in 2011 after orthopedic surgery, the female died of cancer in 2013 [3] .
In 2011, a new aviary was built to accommodate four raccoons. The zoo also housed a new pair of lynxes. In 2012, a pair of Siberian Cranes arrived, as well as 40 ordinary flamingos . In 2013, the zoo for the first time in its history received a pair of cheetahs . They came from the Zoo in Borås in Sweden and were housed in a former Amur Tiger enclosure that was renovated. In addition, it was announced that before the end of the year a new pair of Amur tigers will arrive at the zoo [3] .
