History
Human settlements in the territory surrounding modern Teniya have existed since ancient times. In the IV century, on the site of the modern city, the Moorish ( Berber ) Prince Nubel founded a fortress called Suma ( Arabic: صومعة ). Perhaps Suma was the birthplace of the son of Nubel, the usurper Firm . Later this fortress was known under the Berber name Tizi Nat Aïcha ( Tizi Nat Aïcha ), or Arabic Teniya or Tnia - the remains of the fortress existed until the middle of the XIX century . After the French conquest of Algeria in the 1830s, a military camp appears next to the ancient fortress, which eventually turned into a European settlement. In 1877, the Arabic name was replaced by the French name Menerville ( fr. Menerville ) in honor of the first chairman of the colonial court of the city of Algeria, [5] [6] . After the country gained independence in 1962 , the city was returned the historical name [7] .
May 21, 2003 at 17:44 local time near Teniya was the epicenter of a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 points. As a result of this earthquake, 2,268 people were killed, 10,147 people were injured and about 200,000 people were left homeless [8] .
