Biography
Walter Greiner was born on October 29, 1935 in (now part of the Judenbach community, Sonneberg district , Thuringia ). In 1956, he entered Johann Wolfgang Goethe Frankfurt University , where he studied physics and mathematics, and in 1958 he graduated with a bachelor's degree. In 1960, Greiner received his master's degree at the Darmstadt Higher Technical School , presenting a diploma entitled "Plasma Reactors" [4] [5] .
In 1960-1962, Greiner worked at the University of Freiburg . In the same place in 1961 he defended his dissertation on the topic “Nuclear Polarization in Muon Atoms” ( German: Die Kernpolarisation in μ-Mesonenatomen ), its scientific adviser was . In the years 1962-1964 he was an employee of the University of Maryland as an assistant [4] [5] .
In 1964, Greiner accepted the offer to head the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Department of Theoretical Physics at Frankfurt University, and from January 1965 became a professor at the university. In 1965-1995 he was the director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Frankfurt University, and in 2001-2002 he was the dean of the Faculty of Physics. In 2003, together with , he co-founded the [4] [5] .
Scientific Results
In the 1960s, Walter Greiner conducted research related to the islands of stability of isotopes of superheavy elements, as well as a quantitative description of the properties of superheavy nuclei. The results obtained proved to be an important contribution to the physics of heavy ions , as well as to the work on the synthesis of new elements [2] .
A number of his works were devoted to the development of quantum electrodynamics of superstrong fields. In particular, he investigated the spontaneous decay of vacuum in superstrong fields that arise in giant atoms that appear during collisions of heavy ions [2] .
Greiner was the author of more than 700 articles in scientific journals, as well as a number of books. In particular, his multivolume course in theoretical physics, published in German, was translated into English and a number of other languages [3] .
