Japanese rice is the name of rice that is grown and consumed in Japan . We are talking about varieties of the variety "Japanese" with short grains. There are two types of Japanese rice - regular (粳米) and sticky .
General information
Japanese rice is the basis of the national diet. Mochi (sticky) and sake are made from it . The government supports the consumption of domestic rice by the population by setting high prices for imported rice, for example, from China, Australia and the USA. However, these same prices lead to a reorientation of some consumers to foreign rice. Abroad, Japanese rice is sometimes called sushi rice, which is actually made primarily from it in Japan.
Cultivation
The cultivation of Japanese rice is characterized by high mechanization, high intensity and lack of cultivated land. Rice terraces cover many hills and mountains in the countryside.
Rice is grown throughout Japan, and some of its varieties - and abroad, for example, in the United States. On the northern island of Hokkaido, with its colder climate, special varieties are used.
