Exhibits
The exhibits of the museum are dated from 1859 - the year of the opening of the port of Yokohama for foreigners [2] .
The museum funds the work of many influential and famous Art Nouveau artists including Konstantin Branquisi , Paul Cézan , Salvador Dali , Jimmy Ernst, Rene Magrit , Henri Matisse , Osip Zadkine and Pablo Picasso . Especially well represented are the works of Dadaists and surrealists [3] [4] .
The museum also exhibits works by important Japanese artists, especially those associated with Yokohama, such as Imamura Shiko, Kanzan Simoura and Tizuko Yoshida, Kiyoshi Hasegawa, Yasumas Morimur and Lee U Hwan .
An important part of the museum’s funds is photography, since Yokohama was one of the places where this art form appeared in Japan [2] .
In recent years, the museum has hosted the New Artist Picks (NAP) exhibition of young talents showing the work of emerging artists. [five]
Museum Building
The building of the Yokohama Museum of Art was designed by Kenzo Tange , a Japanese architect who won the 1987 Pritzker Architecture Prize . The structure is described as “attractive and spacious, with plenty of air and well-lit” [3] . Reinforced concrete construction. The construction area is 9,621 m², the land area is approximately 20,000 m² [1] [6] .
In the center of the building is a characteristic tower of a semi-cylindrical shape, the height of an eight-story building [5] .
The space in front of the main entrance of the museum is Art Plaza, part of the Grand Mall Park.
The facade of the building, with a specific symmetrical masonry, decorated with circles and squares, 180 meters in length. A colonnade goes along the whole facade. The design of the building symbolizes the concepts of “look,” “create,” “learn,” which the museum focuses on [5] .
Museum Premises
The main hall of the museum (“Grand Gallery”) is a spacious room, 100 meters long and 20 meters high [5] , in the central part of the building. The three-light room (from the first to the third floor) is finished with granite. The hall is also the lobby and exhibit. The lobby is located in the middle of the hall, and to the right and to the left of it on the terrace galleries there is a part of the museum’s permanent exhibition.
The glass ceiling of the hall allows natural light into the room. Blinds allow to control illumination. The hall has excellent acoustics, and it is often used for art projects and cultural events.
The main hall of the museum is considered a “particularly outstanding” example of modern architecture [3] .
On the floor above the main hall are exhibition halls. Three of them are reserved for exhibitions, and four are for permanent museum exhibits including a photo gallery.
Museum equipment allows exhibits to be displayed that require maintaining a certain temperature and humidity, as well as large exhibits. On each side of the floor are very impressive halls seven meters high. One of them is round at the base, and the second square. It is worth noting that the circle and square are repeatedly used in the design of the building [5] .
In the right wing (if you look at the facade) there are art workshops where master classes for children and adults are held. Encouraging people to engage in art is one of the important tasks of the museum [2] .
In the left wing of the building is the Information Department, which contains more than 100,000 Japanese and foreign art books and magazines, and about 580 films [1] [5] .
In addition, the museum has a concert hall with 240 seats for lectures and performances [5] .
Shop, Cafe, and Restaurant
The museum store offers catalogs of exhibits, art books, postcards, souvenirs on the topics of museum exhibitions.
Cafe Ogurajama with 60 seats is one of the largest in Minato Mirai and is quite popular with the townspeople. In addition to ordinary drinks and snacks in the cafe there are special menus dedicated to museum exhibitions [5] . The cafe is named after the picture of "Ogurajama" (Mount Ogura), written on folding canvases [7] .
In the left wing of the museum building is the French cuisine restaurant BRASSERIE T'S Musée. If you sit by the window, you will see Susumu Shingu's work “Wind Musical Notes” ( Photo of the video) [5] [8] [9] .
