The Battle of Harlem Heights ( Battle of Harlem Heights " battle on the Harlem Heights ") - a battle that occurred around and the day after the Americans surrendered the city of New York during the campaign for New York and New Jersey during the War for US independence . The battle took place in the territory known as the MorningSight Heights and east of them, in northwestern Manhattan . The Continental Army under the command of George Washington , Nathaniel Green and Israel Putnam (9 thousand people) held positions in Upper Manhattan against the vanguards of the British army (5 thousand people) under the command of Major General Henry Clinton. Early in the morning patrols encountered pickets from the British light infantry , and the British began to pursue the Americans, approaching the positions of Washington at the heights. Having overestimated their forces, the British greatly detached from their main forces, and Washington, noticing this, ordered them to attack on the flank. The British detachment escaped encirclement and retreated. After receiving reinforcements, the British infantry took up a position in the fields at the Morning Heights. After two hours of fierce firefight, the British began to retreat to the main line of their troops. Washington withdrew the persecution so as not to get involved in a major battle, and returned to its position. The battle helped the Continental Army regain confidence. This is also Washingtonβs first victory during the war of independence.
