Car of the Year in Russia

The national award “Car of the Year in Russia” was founded in 2000 by the publishing house Avtopanorama. The first competition was organized at the junction of 2000 and 2001 with the support of the association “Russian Automobile Dealers”.

The second All-Russian contest “Car of the Year in Russia” included 12 nominations and was held by Autopanoram and Formula magazines with the support of the Russian Automobile Dealers Association in 2001. 22 211 people took part in it. The Peugeot 206 was the winner in the small class category, the Mercedes-Benz C-class middle class , the BMW 7 executive class. In the nomination "New Year" voting ended with the victory of the BMW 7 sedan. The second place in this category went to the Jaguar X-Type , and the third - to the Mercedes-Benz C-class .

In 2002, as part of the competition, 271 models of cars sold on the Russian market were presented. The list of nominations has expanded to 18 categories. 18 347 people took part in the voting. Audi A8 was recognized as a novelty of the year.

The fourth prize drawing was held from November 1, 2003 to February 1, 2004. A total of 34,861 people took part in the voting. 224 cars were nominated for the award, which were divided into 14 categories ^[1] . BMW 5 won the special nomination “New Year”.

At the end of 2004, it was decided to change the calculation by year. By tradition, voting begins at the end of the year, the results are announced at the beginning of the next. Most manufacturers began to actively use the brand of the competition for promotional purposes and the relevance of the year of receiving the award indicated on the logo has become very important for car manufacturers.

On April 15, 2005, the best, according to 49,878 people, models of cars officially sold in Russia were announced at a solemn ceremony at the Crocus Expo Exhibition Center in Moscow. A total of 253 cars were presented in 18 categories. The contest was held among readers of Autopanoram , Men's Health , 5 Wheel , Company and Russian Newsweek magazines .

In 2006, almost 85 thousand people participated in the voting for cars of the year in Russia. The number of nominees includes 217 models of vehicles on the domestic market ^[2] . Winners were announced at the end of April.

In 2007, the title of car of the year in Russia was awarded in 19 nominations and two special nominations: "New Year" and "Favorite Brand" ^[3] . The voting results were announced on March 30 at the Central Exhibition Hall "Manege". For the title of car of the year fought 306 vehicle models. According to the organizers of the contest, the magazine Avtopanorama, 82,302 people took part in the survey (84% were men and 16% were women). According to the voting results, Toyota was recognized as the favorite brand.

In 2008, 104,722 people took part in the award competition, in 2009 - 202,776 people.

In 2010, 391 contenders competed in 22 nominations (20 classes and 2 special nominations: “New Year” and “Favorite Brand”) for the opportunity to enter the top three. 1,443,315 people from 5,000 cities and towns of Russia took part in the voting. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz E-class was named the “New Year”, and the title “Favorite Brand”, like in 2009, was given to BMW ^[4] .

In 2012, 375 cars competed for the titles of the car of the year in Russia. Voting took place within three months. The winners included only one Russian-made car. In the nomination "New Year" won the car Hyundai Solaris , and in the category "Favorite brand" - Audi ^[5] .

The voting results of 2013, held from January 1 to March 31, were announced on April 24 in the Moscow Hall of Izvestia Hall. For the title of car of the year in Russia fought in 23 classes and 385 models competed in three special nominations ^[6] .

The 2014 competition was attended by over a million people. In the fight for the title of car of the year, 400 models participated, officially represented on the Russian market. The best cars were determined in 23 classes and three special nominations: "New Year", "Favorite brand in the mass segment" and "Favorite brand in the premium segment." The Mercedes-Benz W222 S-class car has been recognized as a novelty of the year. The favorite brand in the mass segment in 2014 was the Korean Hyundai , and the German Audi was named the favorite brand in the premium segment. Among domestic brands there was only one winner - LADA Largus Furgon (mini-vans).

In 2015, 938 904 people took part in the voting ^[7] .

In 2016, 353 vehicle models competed for the award. 934,326 people from 86 regions of Russia expressed their opinions ^[8] .

In 2017, the summing up and presentation of the “Car of the Year in Russia 2017” award took place in Moscow on April 26. In total, 972,307 people took part in the voting. The most popular category has become "New". There, Hyundai Creta won. The same model took the first line in the nomination "Compact SUVs". Volkswagen won the majority of votes in the “Favorite brand in the mass segment” category, and Mercedes-Benz in the “Favorite brand in the premium segment” category. LADA Vesta was recognized as the best in the “Small class” in the category “Mini vans” - LADA Largus Van. For the second year in a row, GAZel NEXT has become the best car in the “Vans” class.

In 2018, 106,815 people from all over Russia took part in the voting for their favorite cars. The ceremony took place on April 26 in the Moscow Palace of Youth in the new format of the automobile Oscar ^[9] . In addition to the main ones there were several special nominations. In the nomination "The most recognizable Chinese brand" won the brand Chery. In the nomination “Favorite brand. Mass segment won LADA. Championship in the nomination "Favorite brand. Premium segment "took Mercedes-Benz. And the title of "New Year" received a sports car KIA Stinger.
