Group History
The group was formed in New York in 1979 and it had several compositions, including the one where pop star Madonna was a drummer . In the early 1980s, the group included Madonna, Angie Smith on bass , and the brothers Gilroy, Dan and Ed, both on the guitar (Dan was also the main vocalist) [2] . Dan Gilroy was Madonna's boyfriend for a short time, and after much persuasion also allowed her to perform lead vocals in the group. This led Madonna to leave to form a new band, “Emmy and the Emmys” [3] .
In the mid-1980s, the group consisted of Gilroy (Dan now focused solely on vocals while Ed played guitar ), Gary Bourke (bass), Paul Cowk ( keyboards ) and Stephen Bray ( drums ). Bray and Bourke previously played in Madonna's band Emmy and the Emmys [4] .
The band signed to ZE Records and released their self-titled album in 1987 via MCA Records . On the album was the USA top 10 hit “Right On Track”. Later, Randy Jackson (bass) and E. Dr. Smith (The Drummstick, drums ) joined the band [5] .
The second album was recorded, but was not released. His last single was a cover of the Beatles - the song “ Drive My Car ” from the 1988 movie Driving License [6] . Soon after, the band split up, Bray later co-authored several big hits with Madonna. The group was nominated for Best New Grammy Artist in 1988, losing to Jody Watley [7] . Most of their videos , including “Right on Track,” were directed by Jeff Stein, director of The Who Are Alright .
On April 5, 2016, Breakfast Club released a new EP called Percolate , which included songs from the band's unreleased second album. This is their first release of new material in nearly three decades [8] .
