Biography
He came from a poor noble family of the Kagul district postmaster. He studied at the Izmail district school, from where he transferred to the Odessa gymnasium of the Richelieu Lyceum , which he graduated (1863) with a silver medal. In 1863 he entered the law faculty of the Richelieu Lyceum , but in the same year he transferred to the law faculty of Moscow University ; after his graduation in 1867 with a candidate ’s degree in December 1869 he was enrolled as a scholarship holder at the Demidov Law Lyceum to prepare classes for the Department of Law Encyclopedia and was sent abroad: he visited the universities of Vienna , Berlin , Heidelberg .
Returning to Russia, he took up the department of the encyclopedia of law at the Demidov Lyceum - the acting professor . In April 1872 he defended a master's thesis at Moscow University “Law, Morality and the State according to the teachings of John Friedrich Herbart and his school” and in May 1873 transferred to the post of assistant professor at the Department of Law Encyclopedia of Moscow University, where in March 1875 he defended his doctoral dissertation “ Custom civil law of France in its historical development ” is an extensive work that introduced Russian readers to the vast material of French customary law. Since 1875 - an ordinary professor of the Department of Encyclopedia of Law. Secretary of the Moscow Law Society and the editors of his journal.
He was distinguished by great scientific curiosity and sincere dedication to teaching. Feeling a lively attraction to the philosophical study of law, he increased interest in this subject in his students and was the first at the Faculty of Law to set an example of a legal seminary, similar to German universities. As secretary of the Moscow Law Society, he contributed a lot to raising the scientific level of his studies, as well as revitalizing his journal.
