In 2003, the exhibition halls were expanded: a restoration was carried out in a neighboring mansion, as a result of which the house acquired the features of an empire , and a basement complex connecting two buildings was built underground. For 2018, the gallery building complex is a single architectural ensemble, which includes 22 halls with paintings and graphic works. The museum exposition includes more than 1200 works of Alexander Shilov, donated by the artist as a gift to Moscow [1] .
History
Znamenka Mansion
The gallery of Alexander Shilov is located in an empire mansion of the 19th century , built in 1829 by the architect Evgraf Tyurin [1] [2] . According to the project of 1827, the building had two floors, a mezzanine and two symmetrical buildings on the facade . The entrance to the building was through the courtyard, while the main staircase was in the central part of the house. The mansion was slightly rebuilt in the years 1850-1970: the empire office wing was destroyed, two new buildings were built in the courtyard. In 1881-1893, a large-scale renovation was carried out in the building, during which the third floor was added, the eastern facade was enlarged using side extensions, the entrance to the courtyard was made on the ground floor, the lobby and the main staircase were reconstructed. According to the project of the architect George Kaiser, the eastern facade of the house was decorated with corner shovels , curly panels , sandriks and castle stones with lion masks [3] [4] .
Since 1850, the building was rented out, and since 1901 it was rented by the Society for the Promotion of Diligence in Moscow . After the revolution of 1917, by decree of the Soviet government, the house was given over to housing communal apartments and public organizations [5] . In the 1950s, the building was owned by the All-Union Society of Inventors and Rationalizers , on the initiative of which a major overhaul was carried out in the mansion. At the same time, all outbuildings were demolished, and the building itself lost the historic interiors of the 1850s [3] .
In the 2000s, the house underwent restoration, during which the basement , facade surfaces, slopes , cornice, stucco molding , lion masks, caryatids , metal décor , and the drainage system were redone [3] .
Museum Opening
In 1996, Alexander Shilov donated more than 350 paintings and drawings to the state. Decree of the Government of Moscow No. 21 of January 14, 1997 made a decision to establish a state art gallery bearing the name of the artist [6] [7] [8] . On May 31, 1997, the gallery [1] [9] was officially opened, at which the artist promised to donate the best works to the state. The opening ceremony was attended by well-known public figures and artists such as Ruslan Khasbulatov , Vladimir Potanin , Mark Zakharov , Nikolai Slichenko and Victor Rozov , Joseph Kobzon and Evgeny Matveev [10] . In 1999, Alexander Shilov was appointed a member of the Presidential Council for Culture and Art [11] .
| Each time, after my personal exhibition, people turned to the leadership of the state and the Ministry of Culture with a request to make my exhibition permanent, so I had the moral right to apply to the State Duma so that I want to transfer my collection to the country, to my people <... > [12] .Alexander Shilov |
In the period from 1998 to 2010, the Moscow authorities several times published documents supporting the expansion of the exposition and the creation of exhibition halls in neighboring mansions [13] . The company “Tverskaya Faynens B.V.” was engaged in the reconstruction and restoration of the gallery’s premises; it was also involved in litigation with people who did not want to leave the houses designated as a museum [14] .
The state’s active support of Shilov’s work [15] , expressed in sponsoring the expansion and reconstruction of the gallery, is criticized by art historians and public figures [16] [17] . Some authors also note the pro-state nature of the painting by Alexander Shilov [18] , which influenced the talent of the artist in large rooms [19] and the lack of artistic meaning in his paintings [20] [21] .
Extension
In 2000, Mayor Yuri Luzhkov decided to expand the gallery at the expense of a neighboring building at Znamenka , 7 [22] . The increase in exhibition spaces was associated with an increase in the number of paintings in the collection - each year the artist gives more than a hundred paintings on City Day , which required additional space to exhibit. By 2018, the gallery had organized three new halls, and the total area of the museum is 2 thousand square meters [6] . When annexing additional premises, the ensemble of the church of St. Nicholas Streletsky was destroyed, of which only a memorial chapel remained [23] [6] . For people with disabilities, the gallery provides specialized excursions, and the rooms are equipped with elevators and ramps.
The rebuilt empire mansion was founded in 1820 and had a U-shape characteristic of Moscow buildings after the fire of 1812 . The first floor was decorated with rust , base, interfloor traction , castle stones. The second and third floors were residential and surrendered for private needs. In 1843, the main facade of the house was changed: a rustic, castle stones were removed from it, and a balcony and three windows were added on the second floor. In 1859, two extensions were added to the building, as well as the residential part of the house was redone. The gap between the two buildings was built up, which led to the disappearance of the original form [24] . From 2000 to 2003, the house was rebuilt according to the project of the architect Mikhail Posokhin : facade decorations in the Empire style, as well as elements of classicism were added [13] . For 2018, the gallery building is a four-story building, decorated with a portico and a protruding front facade [24] .
In 2002, in the territories cleared for construction, the five-story Znamenka shopping and administrative complex [25] and the Znamenka Residence apartments with luxury apartments [26] were erected. In the same year, the Directorate of the Alexander Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts went to court in connection with unauthorized buildings that violate the historical appearance of the center of Moscow. In addition, the built-up territories were previously granted to the Pushkin Museum for the placement of fund storages. However, the court found no violations [27] .
In 2004, the buildings on Znamenka 5 and 7 were united by a common basement to form a single exhibition complex, including exhibition halls, archive storage, office space and outbuildings [24] .
Exposition
The basis of the exposition consists of picturesque portraits of representatives of the creative intelligentsia , participants in the Great Patriotic War , scientists, doctors, clergy, women's and children's portraits and highly social images, as well as lyrical landscapes and still lifes.
The exposition includes a self-portrait of the artist, which is a symbol of the gallery, written in 1985, when Shilov was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR . A special place in the artist’s work is occupied by the images of relatives and friends: mother, grandmother, daughter Masha, brother .
In addition to paintings, the exhibition features paintings made in the pastel technique: "Mashenka Shilova", "Our Earth", "Portrait of a Hungarian gypsy Nana", "My mother" .
Events
On an ongoing basis, the gallery provides guided tours for cadet schools, students of military institutions, and military units. The thematic exhibition “They Fought for their Homeland” with the support of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin was exhibited in many hero cities and cities of military glory: Volgograd , Yaroslavl , Pskov , Veliky Novgorod , Sevastopol , Murmansk , Arkhangelsk .
The gallery also hosts lectures on art, regular events “Stars on a Visit at Alexander Shilov”, evenings “Meeting at the Portrait”, concerts of classical music, as well as charity events dedicated to veterans of the Great Patriotic War [1] . Artists and musicians perform here, such as Elena Obraztsova , Vladimir Matorin , Zurab Sotkilava , Yuri Bashmet and Igor Butman [12] [28] [29] .
In 2017, the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the gallery was held, in honor of which a temporary exhibition dedicated to the life of Alexander Shilov was opened, as well as a concert of classical music [30] .
