Samoilovich Museum

The Samoilovich Museum is a memorial complex of the Soviet polar explorer, professor (1928), doctor of geographical sciences (1934) R. L. Samoilovich . Opened September 11-12, 1981. It is currently the only museum in the country dedicated to the polar explorer of the Arctic and Antarctic.

History

The Museum of the Soviet Polar Researcher, Professor (1928), Doctor of Geographical Sciences (1934) R. L. Samoilovich was opened on September 12, 1981 and is a memorial complex of Professor Rudolf Lazarevich Samoilovich. The museum is the only museum in the country dedicated to the life and work of the polar explorer of the Arctic and Antarctic [1] .

In the museum, on the 130th anniversary of the scientist’s birthday, a multimedia exhibition was opened.

The name of R. L. Samoilovich is on a par with such polar researchers as Amundsen, Scott, F. Nansen, Rusanov and others. The scientist made a great contribution to the study of the Arctic. In 1938, R. L. Samoilovich was repressed, on March 4, 1939 he was shot.

Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor, Knight of Orders of Lenin and the Red Banner of Labor, Head of the Geographical Society of the USSR, International Aero-Arctic Society, Honorary Member of the Geographical Societies of the USA , Sweden, Austria, R. L. Samoilovich was born and raised in the city of Azov. The scientist was the organizer of about 20 research expeditions to the Arctic.

Currently, the scientist’s museum occupies part of a one-story brick house that belonged to the father of R. L. Samoilovich. His family lived in this house. Here young Rudolf Lazarevich graduated from a four-year male gymnasium, later studied at the Mariupol Alexander School. After graduating from high school, he studied at the Mining Academy in the German city of Freiburg.

The museum’s exposition presents the memorial room of a student of the Azov Gymnasium. And she created the interior of the late XIX - early XX century. Original photographs hang on the walls, objects and personal items are arranged. Authentic are a desk and chair, a writing desk, books of the time when Samoilovich studied at the gymnasium. The results of the scientist's work are reflected in artistic compositions, books, photographs. A bust of R. L. Samoilovich by sculptor I. Shitsburg is exhibited in the museum hall.

Among the photographs are young R. L. Samoilovich at the age of six, Azov embankment, men's gymnasium, Mariupol streets, Mariupol gymnasium where Rudolf studied, photograph of the Rudolf Lazarevich Samoilovich research vessel.
