Biography
Pedro Olivieri was born, presumably at the end of the 19th century, in Uruguay. He began playing football in 1913 as part of the capital's River Plate FC, and in the very first season became the champion of Uruguay. From 1914 to 1922 he played for another club from Montevideo, Nacional. With the “tricolor” Olivieri won the national championship five more times [1] .
In 1916-1917, Olivieri played for the national team of Uruguay, having spent a total of five matches for it [2] .
In 1922, Olivieri began his coaching career and almost immediately led the team of Uruguay, which was to go to Rio de Janeiro for the next championship of South America. After four matches of the group stage, three teams scored five points each - Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay , with Uruguay taking first place in terms of additional indicators (more wins than Brazil and better goal difference than Paraguay). We had to hold additional matches between these three teams. However, Uruguay refused to participate in them in protest against the terrible refereeing of the Brazilian referee Pedro Santos in the match lost to Paraguay (0: 1). As a result, in the “golden match” Brazil beat Paraguay 3-0 and became the two-time champion of the continent [3] . Olivieri continued to coach the team until 1923, after which he was replaced by Leonardo De Lucca .
In 1927, the Peruvian Football Federation invited Pedro Olivieri to lead his team, which was to debut internationally at the home championship of South America. Olivieri took Raul Blanco, the physical training professor and director of the Montevideo Sports Field No. 5, to his coaching staff, who will subsequently lead the Uruguayan national team to victory in the 1935 South American Championship [4] . The Uruguayan tandem managed to bring Peruvians to third place in the championship, for this it was enough to beat the national team of Bolivia in the full-time confrontation (3: 2). There was no way to compete with the recognized leaders of world football - Uruguay and Argentina [4] [5] .
