William Paul Gottlieb ( January 28, 1917 - April 23, 2006 ) is an American journalist and photographer who is best known for his classic photographs of the leading artists of the Golden Age of American jazz of the 30s and 40s of the 20th century . Gottlieb's photographs are some of the most famous and widely reproduced images of this era of jazz [4] .

Throughout his career, Gottlieb has photographed hundreds of outstanding jazz musicians and personalities, usually while they play or sing in renowned New York jazz clubs. Well-known musicians photographed by Gottlieb: Louis Armstrong , Duke Ellington , Charlie Parker , Billy Holiday , Dizzy Gillespie , Earl Hines , Joe Stafford , Telonius Monk , Stan Kenton , , Benny Goodman , Coleman Hawkins , Louis Jordan Fitzgerald and [4] [5] .
