Breed History
The homeland of this breed is the Kuril Islands Kunashir and Iturup , from where at the end of the 20th century the Kuril Bobtail was brought to the mainland.
The first step in the development of the breed, already known as the Kuril Bobtail, was the creation of a preliminary standard in the Soviet Felinological Federation (SFF). According to the results of the first mating, it became clear that the type of Kuril cats and short tail are inherited stably, the “pompom tail” is not associated with any anomalies harmful to the health of cats. On October 21, 1991, the SFF adopted the first standard of Kurilian Bobtail.
At a seminar of experts- felinologists on December 4, 1994, Russia proposed to finalize the SFF standard for native breeds and prepare materials for the approval of a new breed WCF (World Cat Federation).
As of June 9, 2009, WCF and FIFe recognize two Kurilian Bobtail breeds: half-long and short-haired.
