Henry Denver , 1st Earl of Danby ( English Henry Danvers, 1st Earl of Danby ; June 28, 1573 - January 20, 1643 ) - English statesman and military leader. Member of the Privy Council of England. Commander of the Order of the Garter .

Biography

In his youth, he served in the retinue of Philip Sidney , whom he accompanied in the countries of continental Europe, and probably attended the battle of Zutphen in 1586.

He began his military career after the death of his master in the Netherlands , where he served as a volunteer under the command of Moritz, Count of Nassautsky , later the Prince of Orange, in the detachment sent by the English Queen Elizabeth I to help the French king Henry IV . Moritz, Earl of Nassau appointed him at the age of 18 to command a company of infantry.

In 1591 he took part in the siege of Rouen , for courage and distinction there as a favorite of the queen and commander Robert Devereux, 2nd Essex was knighted.

Member of the Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604) . In 1597, under the command of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham, with the support of the Dutch provinces of the United Provinces , with the rank of captain participated in the seizure of the Spanish city of Cadiz .

In 1607 he was appointed Lord President of the Irish province of Munster , served in this position until 1615.

From 1613 he was the keeper of the St. James Palace .

Upon assuming the throne of Jacob I, Henry Denver was elevated to the rank of peer with the title of Baron Dantez, and under King Charles I of England, he was given the title of Count Danby.

He donated to the University of Oxford five acres of land, on which a botanical garden was later established, founded a hospital and a school in Malmesbury, in his native county of Wiltshire .
