Biography
Prince Wilhelm is the son of the Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Filipstal-Barkhfeldskogo and his second wife Sofia (1794-1873), daughter of Prince Ludwig Wilhelm Geldrikus Ernst Bentheim-Shteinfurtskogo .
Prince William joined the Prussian fleet and on January 29, 1854 received the rank of captain-lieutenant. In the summer of 1854, he commanded the Amazone Corvette . October 15, 1854 he was awarded the rank of corvette captain. In the winter of 1855-1856, Prince William headed the second department of the Admiralty. At the same time, until November 1856, he was in command of the Danzig steam corvette. On this ship, he took part in an African expedition under the command of the Prince and Admiral Adalbert of Prussia . During the trip, Prince Wilhelm came into conflict with the admiral over punitive measures for reef witches. Family
Prince William was married four times. In 1857, he entered into an organic marriage with Princess Maria of Ganauska (1839-1917), then after a divorce he married Princess Juliana of Bentheim-Steinfurt (1842-1878) in 1873. After the death of his wife in 1879, he married Princess Adelaide of Bentheim-Steinfurt (1840-1880), and then in 1884 - to Princess Augusta Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg (1844-1932).
