History

In the last quarter of the 19th century, the Rostov entrepreneur Ter-Abramian owned several houses in the city, kept a bookstore, and was engaged in publishing. Until the mid-1880s, its printing house and editorial office were located in rented premises. To expand publishing, he needed his own house with premises for a printing house and editorial office.

By this time, Bolshaya Sadovaya Street in the city of Rostov-on-Don became the main street of the city. In 1886, on it, between Semashko and Gazetny lanes, a new three-story brick house of the book publisher Ivan Abramovich Ter-Abramian was built. Ter-Abramian’s house was the second multi-story building on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street. The house had two domes and was located near the five-story building, which was built according to the project of the Moscow architect, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts A.N. Pomerantsev (now Rostovenergo occupies the first floor of the building).

The house, built with Ter-Abramian’s funds, has an elegant facade. The main entrance is made in its center, above the entrance - decorated pilaster portals are arranged on the second and third floors. The upper floor ended with a curved pediment. On the pediment the construction date “1886” flaunts. The facade of the building is decorated with brick decor. The “elegant style" of the building is emphasized by curved attics, the central pediment of the pilaster portal, double sandriks , cartouches, pilasters with panels, flowerpots and other architectural details. Three balconies with curved mesh fencing and cone-shaped domes completed the look of the house.

The apartment building was built according to the project of a graduate of the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers Nikolai Matveevich Sokolov , who in 1886 worked as a technician in the city government, and since 1887 he was the chief architect of the city. In the built house, the creative manner of the architect was embodied, combining an elegant facade with an expressive silhouette completion of the building.

After construction, the premises in the house were leased. On the ground floor there were shops and a photo studio “Isakovich Photography”. In the 1910s, there was a photo studio of G. A. Shifrin and photographer B. P. Mishchenko. For many years, the stationery store I. Panchenko worked in the house. On the second and third floors of the building there was a school for cutting and sewing E. I. Remizova and other offices. In 1918, the editorial office of the newspaper "Evening Time" was located in the building.

The printing house of Ter-Abramian also worked in the building. The printing house had premises on the ground floor with a separate entrance. The printing house published books, calendars, newspapers, etc. Since the construction of the house, the editorial office of the newspaper Don Don Bee has also worked in it.

Ivan Abramovich Ter-Abramian died in 1899. The building and printing house went to his son Aram Ivanovich, who continued and increased his father’s business. In 1910, about 50 people worked in the printing house on 6 printing machines and 15 machines. The printing machines were electric. A.I. Ter-Abramian died in 1919, after his death the printing house was closed.

In the 1920s, the building was nationalized. The house was inhabited by residents in communal apartments. There were still shops on the ground floor.

During the Great Patriotic War, the domes of the building were damaged, but the building survived. After the war, the house was restored, but without domes, the facade was whitewashed. Currently, the building is populated, on the ground floor there is a clothing store El Marche.
