When hordes of the enemy occupied Odessa, Nikolaev, Perekop and the threat of the occupation of Crimea loomed and the Germans avoided the capture of the Black Sea Fleet, the ships were relocated from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk by order of the head of the Soviet government Lenin.
But soon Novorossiysk was in danger of being captured by German hordes and White Guards, and the Soviet Republic did not have sufficient forces for a crushing rebuff to the invaders, in the south of the country, the Council of People's Commissars decided to destroy the fleet.
