History

The first single-faith church on the Don was opened, according to church historian N. Snesarev in 1842; according to another church historian A. Kirillov, in 1844 this happened in the village of Verkhne-Kargalskaya . Unified faith took root in the Orthodox Cossack region slowly, and for the most part faith-based churches and parishes appeared here at the end of the 19th century .

In 1872, on the Azov Square in Novocherkassk (now the Azov Market), a stone two-tier church was built in the name of Archangel Michael . Prior to this, the church in the form of a wooden one, transported to Novocherkassk in February 1813 from Cherkassk , stood on Arkhangelsk Square in the city (now Kirov Square). The new stone temple was consecrated in 1873. The former wooden Mikhailo-Arkhangelsk church, standing on Arkhangelsk Square, stood for several years without service, aging. In 1879, by order of the diocesan authorities, it was turned into a parish church for the co-religionists of Novocherkassk and closest to the city. But since this wooden wooden building, which was still in Cherkassk, had a church for many years, the temple began to threaten the lives of parishioners because of its dilapidation. In this regard, Ataman N.A. Krasnokutsky , the army's punishment officer, released 5 thousand rubles from the army treasury for its restructuring. But for various reasons, the temple was not repaired for several more years, and with another ataman , N.I. Svyatopolk-Mirsky , who examined the old church building in 1885, he instructed to inspect the single-faith church and provide its parishioners with the necessary assistance. The members of the created commission came to the conclusion that it is not possible to maintain the building in its current state. Its restructuring was estimated at 12 thousand rubles, the military treasury pledged to allocate 5 thousand rubles, and parishioners had to collect the remaining 5-7 thousand rubles. On January 26, 1886, the Board of Trustees was approved, which, with the funds available to him, was able to arrange a temporary house of worship and transfer the throne to it from the old church, which was authorized by the Archbishop of Don and Novocherkassk Mitrofan .

On April 25, 1886, the engineer- architect of the Don Cossack Region , KF Künzel, presented to Archbishop Mitrofan the project of a new single-faith church in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God (also wooden), which assumed a length of 23.5 meters and a width of 15 meters. The Board of Trustees began to prepare documents for the construction of the church and prepare for the ceremonial laying of the church, which was timed to coincide with the arrival in Novocherkassk of Metropolitan of Kiev and Galitsky, His Eminence Plato , who served as archbishop of Don and Novocherkassky for ten years (from 1867 to 1877). On June 17, 1886, His Eminence Plato solemnly laid the foundation of a single-faith church in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God on the site of the old St. Michael the Archangel Church. Among the distinguished guests in the event were the head of the Military Staff A. D. Martynov and assistant chieftain A. F. Polyakov [2] . All the higher urban clergy also participated in the service. At the base of the temple was a metal board with the following inscription:

"Laid St. this church in the city of Novocherkassk for the arrival of co-religionists, in the name of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1886, June 17 days, on the 6th summer of the reign of the Most Pious Emperor Alexander Alexandrovich III, with the blessing of the Holy Synod, His Eminence Plato, Metropolitan of Kiev and Galicia at the time of His Eminence Mitrofan Archbishop of Don and Novocherkassk; under the Troop Punched Ataman Troops of the Donskogo Prince Nikolai Ivanovich Svyatopolk-Mirsky, His Assistant General Major Alexei Fedorovich Polyakov, Chief of the Headquarters of the retinue of His Majesty Major General Andrei Dmitrievich Martynov; the building of this temple is supervised by the Regional Don Cossack Army Engineer-Architect Karl Fedorovich Kunzel. This temple is being built at the expense of the Donskago Army and donations from parishioners. ”
"Cossack Herald", No. 49 dated June 19, 1986)

In 1889, the single-faith church in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God was consecrated, serving until the October Revolution . Its history is unknown with the establishment of Soviet power in the Don, as well as the date of its closure, presumably it was closed in the 1930s, after which the temple was demolished to the ground.

In May 2015, at the place where the single-faith church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stood, the chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was consecrated, where the icon of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin is located. [3]
