Biography
The artist was born in the family of William and Annie Webbov. My father was on the board of a local school, my mother was engaged in business in the trade of porcelain and glassware. At the age of eight, he seriously injured his hip, falling from a horse. He was in the hospital of St. Thomas within two years due to a severe bone fracture [2] .
Hector Thomas Maybank Webb worked as an official in the local administration in Croydon , and in his spare time studied music (he sang baritone and played the piano , organ and cello ). He began his career as a professional artist only in 1902. At that time, Thomas Maybank became a full-time artist in the satirical newspaper “Punch” , in which he worked until 1909 [2] .
In the 1910s, he took up book graphics, worked at The Platt & Peck Co , and specialized in children's books. In 1914, he created illustrations for the children's books The Conquerors of Mexico Retold from Prescott's Conquest of Mexico by Henry Gilbert and The Goblin Scouts by Harry Golding, in 1915 for his book Bubble and Squeak , among many others [3 ] .
Over the years, Thomas Maybank has been creating, since 1921, illustrations for the children's comic book Oojah , composed by Flo Lancaster (a pseudonym for Gilda Florence Collins, Eng. Hilda Florence Collins ), which has been published in the Daily Sketch for decades . It was a conservative daily small-format newspaper ( tabloid ); published by the Associated Newspapers ( DMG Media ). It was founded in 1909 (and in 1971 the publication was included in the Daily Mail media group). The first comic book about the adventures of an elephant was published on February 18, 1919. In the early 1920s, the comic book began to be widely known. Several books dedicated to his adventures were published with illustrations by the artist ( E. Hulton & Co , London ). The character became so popular that some quotes from it became phraseological units of modern English. When Thomas Maybank died in Escher in 1929 [4] , the artist Henry Matthew Talintyre continued the series in the same style until the early 1950s. In 1937, he published in the London publishing house Ward Lock & Co after the death of the artist his book "Mirth by Maybank - For Young and Old Alike" [2] [5] .
The artist’s grave is located in Buckingham at the cemetery at the Church of St. George [6] .
Currently, the artist’s paintings are stored in provincial British museums (“Cargo Thrown Overboard” at the Croydon Museum [7] ), in London's The Leicester Galleries [8] and the Museum of Public Transport [9] , as well as in numerous private collections.
Fairytale Maybank Painting
Thomas Maybank actively worked on fabulous images between 1898 and 1912, living at that time in the provinces and London suburbs: in Buckingham, Croydon, Escher. It is believed that he created the most successful of his easel work in this genre between 1902 and 1904. These include A Bank Holiday in Goblin Land , Coronation of Titania and New Year's Eve . It is believed that he drew inspiration from the works of Richard Doyle . The characters of his work were small figures of fantastic creatures, often painted with pen and ink only. The artist’s paintings and watercolors were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts , the Royal Society of British Artists , Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil [8] .
Thomas Maybank created illustrations for William Shakespeare's play “A Midsummer Night's Dream” [8] . Especially popular was the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll , published in 1907 and illustrated by the artist [10] . Critics note the "creative and interesting manner" of the illustrator. The artist also illustrated historical books [11] . He created illustrations for the poem by Michael Drayton (1563-1631) "Nymphidia, or the court of fairies" (1627, English. "Nymphidia, the Court of Fairy" ) [12] .
