Nuclear power is currently absent (2017) in Italy .
In 1958 ( Latina NPP ), 1959, 1961 and 1970 ( Garigliano NPP) in Italy were built (using American technology) nuclear power plants , but in 1987 , after the accident at the Chernobyl NPP , Italians voted against the development of nuclear power in the country energy industry, and in 1990 the last nuclear power reactor was shut down in Italy.
The Berlusconi government ( 2008 ) called the decision to close nuclear power plants in Italy a “catastrophe”, but the catastrophe of March 11, 2011 at the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima-1 again inclined public opinion to abandon nuclear power: about 95% of those who voted (turnout 57%) in a national referendum in June 2011 , spoke out against plans proposed by Prime Minister S. Berlusconi to restore nuclear energy in the country [1] . Italy was the first to hold a similar referendum after the accident at the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima-1.
