Biography

In 1855 he graduated from law studies at the University of Siena , where he received a degree in law.

In 1856-1859 he was co-editor of the Archivio storico italiano, in 1850 he was appointed director of the gymnasium in Alexandria, then - director of the naval school in Livorno . He worked as a teacher of romance literature in several Italian schools, including in Piacenza (1868), since 1869 - at the Higher School in Venice. From 1874 until his death - professor, he occupied the department at the University of Florence . Among his famous students is R. Rainier .

For 20 years he worked as a professor at the Institute for Historical Studies in Florence, the creator of the so-called "Florentine School of History." A prominent researcher is the work of Dante Alighieri .

In addition to numerous articles in periodicals, the author of a number of books on the history of literature in Italy, including the predecessors of Boccaccio (1876), an anthology of Italian poetry of the early period (1882), the forerunners of the Renaissance (1877) and the monumental widely conceived “History of Italian literature” (1878-1889).
