The award system of modern Germany , which began to form in West Germany in the 1950s, is rational. There is only one common German (federal) order, which however has eight degrees and an order medal. In addition, each of the 16 regions ( federal states ) of Germany has the right to award its own Order of Merit. This right is currently used by everyone except Hamburg and Bremen. Bavaria, unlike other lands, has two orders [1] . In addition, both at the federal level and at the federal state level (including in Hamburg and Bremen), there are awards that do not have the status of orders - medals and other insignia.
The Bundeswehr awards have a special status, the most important of which are the Bundeswehr Insignia ( de: Ehrenzeichen der Bundeswehr ) and the Order of Pour le Mérite , which, despite its fame, and the fact that officials take part in it, does not have the status of state awards.

| Order of Pour le Mérite | May 31, 1740 (for military merits) May 31, 1842 (for merits in the field of sciences and arts) | Established as the Prussian Order of Military Merit. A hundred years later, a second version of the order appeared, for rewarding for services in the field of sciences and arts. The military version of the order ceased to be awarded after 1918, but the civilian version is still presented. It has a difficult legal status - the order is awarded by the President of Germany , orders are considered state property, and must be returned after the death of the awarded, but the order is not officially a state award. |
