Biography

The son of the Savoyard knight Jean de Gorrevo, from the younger line of the old Savoy house de Gorrevo, and Jeanne de Loriol-Chal, brother of Laurent de Gorrevo .

He began his spiritual career thanks to the patronage of his maternal uncle, Jean de Loriol , Bishop of Nice . On January 27, 1499, he was appointed Pope Alexander VI Canon to Geneva . He became a singer in the cathedral chapel. After the death in July 1499 of Etienne de Morel, bishop of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and administrator of the abbey of Ambrone, a relative of Louis, he was elected July 29 as the diocesan capitul as successor.

The new prelate was only 26 years old, but, according to the hearing report at his election, “he was a worthy subject, a noble breed and a pure life, knowledgeable in real knowledge, and also strong in studying the Scriptures, as well as in theology, and besides , a kind man, modest, tolerant and gentle, friendly and hospitable ” [1] .

The bishop consolidated his reputation by publishing on May 2, 1506 a constitution for his diocese. He was also the abbot-commandant of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Pierre de Bessois in the Langres diocese .

On December 4, 1501, Louis de Gorrevo in Romainmotte married Duke Philibert II the Good and Marguerite of Austria .

in the years 1507-1509 he was replaced several times by the Bishop of Geneva, François Bruno.

Duke Charles II entrusted the bishop with various diplomatic missions: to the pope, the generals of the imperial armies in Northern Italy, to the ruler of the Netherlands Margarita of Austria, who asked for this prelate cardinal hat in 1512. Louis de Gorrevo represented the interests of the duke at the Lateran Cathedral .

On May 21, 1515, a bullion of Leo X established a bishopric in Bourke-en-Bresse, and Louis de Gorrevo was appointed to the new pulpit. The decision to create a new diocese was grateful for the fact that the Duke of Savoy, after much hesitation, nevertheless agreed to give his sister Philibert to the brother of Pope Giuliano Medici . At the end of the year, Louis arrived in his new diocese.

The complaints of the capitul and archbishop of Lyon , whose diocese was divided by this decision, as well as the vigorous protests of Francis I and Connaught de Bourbon , Senor Domb , who became part of the new diocese, forced Leo X to publish a new bull on October 1, 1516, abolishing the first. This decision was the result of the French victory at Marignano and a date in Bologna. However, the pope allowed Louis to use the money received in the liquidated diocese from the sale of indulgences for the construction of the Church of Our Lady.

Charles V , becoming emperor, obtained the publication of the third bull from Leo (12/13/1521), which restored the Brescia bishopric, but Paul III finally abolished it with his bull from January 4, 1534.

Margarita of Austria, despite repeated demarches, was unable to get a cardinal hat for Louis de Gorrevo, and it was only on the reign of Clement VII that he was elevated to the rank of cardinal on March 9, 1530, receiving the title of San Cesareo in Palatio on May 16.

December 5, 1530 was appointed legate a latere in all states of the House of Savoy. In 1532, he abandoned the bishopric of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in favor of his nephew, Jean-Philibert de Loriol de Challe.

He did not take part in the conclave of 1534 . According to the will, he was buried in the Cathedral of John the Baptist in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.

Samuel Gishnon , and Min and Burton, relying on his work, call Louis de Gorrevo the prince of the Holy Roman Empire . In literature, the cardinal is sometimes called Louis II de Gorrevo, as another Louis de Gorrevo, elected bishop of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, was elevated to the rank of cardinal by the antipope Benedict XIII in 1394.
