In December 2010, DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg confirmed that there would be a third film: “How to Train Your Dragon” is at least a trilogy, maybe more, but we know that there are at least three chapters of this story ” [4] . Dean Deblois, screenwriter and director of the second and third films, said “How to Train Your Dragon 2” was created as the second act of the trilogy: “There are certain characters and situations that come into play in the second film and which will become much more significant in the third” [ 5] . Deblois said in an interview that the third part will be released in 2016 [6] . Although the trilogy took a different path, telling the story of Icking and the Vikings, Cressida Cowell said the trilogy and book series would have a similar ending “with an explanation of why there are no more dragons” [7] . The release date has been delayed several times. In September 2012, 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation announced the release date for June 18, 2016, which was later changed to June 17, 2016 [8] [9] . In September 2014, the release date of the film was again rescheduled to June 9, 2017 [10] . Deblois explained the shift in the release date with these words: “I think it was a little ambitious to name 2016. As it usually happens, they kind of throw darts into the future and wherever they go, they call it the release date until we start talking about it in practical terms, and then it becomes like “good, but it's not enough “. So we know that it will take three years, and that the moment from describing and writing the script to the finale and its coverage is just the process of creating models, conducting tests and animations, storyboards that take only about three years ” [11] . In January 2015, the release date was postponed to June 29, 2018 after corporate restructuring, mass layoffs and maximization of the "creative talents and resources of the company, cost reduction and increased profitability" [12] [13] . On June 18, 2016, the release date was postponed to May 18, 2018, taking the release date for Warner Animation Group Lego. Film 2 ” [14] On December 5, 2016, the release date was postponed to March 1, 2019 [15] . It will also be the first DreamWorks Animation movie to be distributed by Universal Pictures , whose parent company NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016, since the end of their distribution linked to 20th Century Fox [16] .
The film is produced by Bonnie Arnold , and executive producers are Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. [17]
Story
Hiccup, becoming the leader of Oluch and rebuilding the island after the destruction he suffered in the previous film , finally achieved his dream - an ideal world for dragons and people. He and his rider friends raids the ships of the warlords who took command of the army of Drago the Bludvist, freeing dragons from their cages and settling them on Oluha. But over time, this leads to an overpopulation of the island with dragons, and the island itself becomes more and more famous for people from outside, including hunters. Hiccup recalls that in childhood, his father told him the legends of seafarers about the waterfall, where the entrance to the hidden world of dragons is located, and decides to try to find him in order to move the dragons to a place safe from the hunters [18] .
After the next raid of Icking, the warlords return to their island with a single dragon - a female dragon, a relative of the Night Furies. She is known as Day Fury. Her riders did not save, because she was frightened of them and disguised. Soon, the grimmel arrives at the base of the military leaders. The terrifying, cunning and treacherous hunter, who destroyed almost all the Night Furies. The warlords tell Grimmel about the riders and promise a reward in exchange for helping to capture the dragons of Oluch. He was initially not interested in catching dragons, but upon learning that the dragon of Icking Toothless is the last known Night Fury, he accepts the offer. The warlords decide to use Day Furia as a decoy for Toothless and, with it, bring the rest of the dragons for whom he is the leader.
Toothless discovers a sleeping Day Furia on Oluh, followed by Ikking and Astrid. Having noticed people, Day Fury is frightened and shoots them with fire, and then flies through its own volley, from which it becomes invisible, and flies away. The next day, Ikking and Toothless look for her, but they find a dragon trap and a dart with poison in the forest. Eret, looking at the dart, finds out Grimmel’s hunting style and warns Icking that this is the most dangerous of all hunters and loves to “play” with his victim, but Icking also declares his willingness to play (alluding to Viggo Grimborn, whom he met in series ). Ikking comes home at night, trying to find his father's maps indicating the possible location of the hidden world, and finds Grimmel there. He demands to give the dragon to him, threatening otherwise to destroy everything that is dear to Hiccups, but he is surrounded by riders. After this, Grimmel is hiding, while his Death Grids set fire to the village.
In the light of the new threat, all Vikings of Olukh decide to leave the house and go west to find a hidden world and settle in a new place away from the military leaders. After a long flight, they find a suitable island where they decide to establish a new village. Toothless, walking around the island, meets Day Furia again and begins to flirt with her, but due to the lack of half of his tail, he cannot fly on his own. Hiccup watching him decides to make Toothless a new automatic dragon-scale tail prosthesis that does not burn from dragon fire (he had previously made a Night Fury Gift like in the short film, but then Toothless refused to fly without Icking). After that, Toothless flies away and finds Day Fury. She teaches him to become invisible, heating the scales from her own plasma volleys. Dragons fall in love with each other.
Meanwhile, Valka sets off for reconnaissance and discovers a fleet of military leaders following the Vikings of Oluch; she can barely get away from the chase. Hiccups with friends decide to attack Grimmel’s camp and take him prisoner, but they fail and are barely saved, and Zabiyaka is captured by Grimmel. After this, Astrid and Hiccups decide to find Toothless and ride astride Gromgild, who finds a waterfall in the sea and flies through it into a giant underground cave, in which there are glowing crystals. Here they discover a hidden world in which all living dragons recognize Toothless and Day Furia as their king and queen. Soon, Icking and Astrid are spotted by wild dragons and attack, forcing Toothless with Gromgilda to save his riders and take them back to the Viking island. Following them, the Day Fury also flies.
Suddenly, Zabiyaka flies on a baby dragon, which Grimmel decided to let go in order to follow her to the New Island. He personally neutralizes Day Fury and Toothless, after which he ties and hangs them to his airship. Threatening to kill Day Furia from his ballista, he forces Toothless to use his leader status, to withdraw the dragons from the attack and urge them to follow him to the approaching ships of the generals.
Hiccups with friends decide to save the dragons and, having jumped off the cliff of the island in wingsuits , they fly onto the ships. In flight, Ikking knocks down Grimmel, thereby saving Toothless and giving parts of the dragons the opportunity to free themselves. The battle of the dragons and Vikings of Oluh begins against the military leaders, in which the first prevail. Grimmel saddles Day Furia and, subjugating it with the poison of Deathclaws, flies away, and Hiccup on horseback on Toothless rushes after him. Hiccup jumps off Toothless to bring down Grimmel from the Day Fury, but he manages to shoot a poison dart and gets into Toothless. Hiccup decides to sacrifice himself and releases Day Furia, asking to save the unconscious and falling Toothless, after which he falls with Grimmel clinging to him. However, at the last moment, Day Fury manages to return and save Icking, and Grimmel breaks.
Hiccups understands that it will be better for all dragons to live in a hidden world, because in the terrestrial world among evil people it is dangerous for them to remain, and in a hidden world dragons will not accept people. Therefore, Ikking hardly decides to part with Toothless and set him free, the remaining Vikings also say goodbye to their dragons. Toothless encourages them to fly, while he flies away last. The Vikings look after them and decide to stay living in a new place in order to protect the secret of the hidden world of dragons from outside people. After some time, the settlers rebuild a new village, and Hiccup marries Astrid.
Over the years, Icking and Astrid have two children. Together they travel by ship to the border of the hidden world and see Bezubik lying on the rocks, Day Furia and their three dragons. Toothless meets them at first wary, but afterwards recognizes and warmly welcomes Icking. After that, Ikking and Astrid with their children fly astride Toothless and Gromgild, together with Day Fury and three dragons. In conclusion, Icking says that even though dragons began to live secretly from people, sometimes they show themselves and wait for the moment when humanity will be ready for a peaceful life in alliance with them [19] .
