Alone in a canoe

The One in Canoe group began in 2010 in Lviv , when the initiator of the creation of the collective gathered for joint rehearsals of 7-8 strangers (none of whom were professional musicians). The team played diverse music and had three vocalists. The composition of the group repeatedly changed over the course of the year, and finally the soloist Irina Shvaidak and guitarist Ustim Pokhmursky decided to secede. Subsequently, Elena Davydenko (drums and percussion) joined them, after which the new team was finally formed ^[2] .

The name "One in a Canoe" arose by chance: Irina, reading material on the Indians on the Internet, met one of their names - Wikeninnish. Translated into Ukrainian, it sounded like One in a canoe , which she really liked, and she decided to use it for the name of the group. The group’s logo resembles a flower with six petals and depicts the resonant holes of a traditional Ukrainian bandura . At the same time, each petal symbolizes a boat ^[3] .

Over time, the group began to actively tour and appear on the stages of various festivals, gradually gaining fame (while all members of the collective continued to engage in non-musical activities) ^[2] . The group does not have a producer and a team; all organizational issues are decided by the musicians themselves ^[4] . As producer V. Shepherd noted in 2015, “the popularity of One in a Canoe seems paradoxical to some. The guys did not take part in any talent shows, did not shoot videos, did not rotate on the radio. <...> They perform simple philosophical songs with minimal accompaniment - and at the same time they collect full halls in all cities of Ukraine ” ^[5] .

In 2012, the group won the Russian Metro On Stage competition, after which they performed in Moscow on Poklonnaya Hill along with winning groups from other countries ^{[6] [7]} . However, after the deterioration of Russian-Ukrainian relations, the group refused to perform in Russia ^[3] .

In 2016, the first studio album was released, the same name with the name of the group, which immediately included 25 songs ^[8] . The album was recorded in the Dnieper ^[4] . The album was highly appreciated by various music publications ^{[9] [10] [11]} .

In support of the album, a series of concerts were held throughout the country ^{[12] [13]} . During the tour the composition of the group changed: drummer Elena Davydenko was replaced by Igor Dzikovsky ^[14] .

In 2017, the group received the “Selection” award, presented by the Jem FM radio station, in the Breakthrough of the Year nomination ^[15] .
