Gainesville ( eng. Gainesville ) - a city in the United States , located in the north-eastern part of Texas , the administrative center of Cook County . Content

History

Gainesville was founded in 1850 with a 16-hectare plot donated by Mary Clark [2] . Initially, residents called their settlement Liberty, but since a city ​​with the same name already existed, one of the first settlers of Cook County, Colonel William Fitzhugh proposed to name the city in honor of General Edmund Gaines [3] . Fitzhugh served under the leadership of Gaines, who at one time sympathized with the Texas Revolution .

During the civil war in October 1862, the city was the , as a result of which 40 people supporting the Union were executed. There were unrest in the city, unknown persons killed the organizers of the raids on unionists, but in general, news in Texas was presented by newspapers in a positive manner [4] .

After the Civil War, the city grew due to the growing popularity of cattle breeding in the region. Located just 11 kilometers from the border with Oklahoma , Gainesville became an important replenishment point for the supplies of cowboys who drove cattle north to Kansas . In 1873, Gainesville received its local government. In the late 1870s, the city was one of the first in Texas, where agent Joseph Glidden from De Kalba advertised and sold a new invention - barbed wire . Since 1890, the Gainesville Daily Register has been published in the city.

In 1910, the courthouse was built, functioning to this day. The building with an octagonal rotunda was designed by the Dallas company Lang & Witchell in the Bozar style with elements of the prairie school style and influenced by the designs of Louis Sullivan [5] .

During the Second World War , the military training camp Camp Howze was located in the city. The new formation added jobs to the city, which suffered from the effects of the Great Depression and ensured stable growth of Gainesville. With the end of the war, the base was closed, its remains are now in private territory.

Geography

According to the 2010 census, 16,202 people lived in the city, there were 5,944 households and 3,914 families. The racial composition of the city: 74.7% are white , 5.1% are African - Americans , 1.3% are Native Americans, 1.3% are Asians , 0.1% (15 people) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 14, 2% are other races, 3.3% are two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 28.3% [10] .

Of 5944 households, children under 18 live in 36.9%. 44.6% of households were couples living together (19.7% with children under 18 years of age), women lived without husbands in 16% of households, men lived without wives in 5.3% of households, 34.2% of households were not by families. Only one person lived in 28.5% of households, 12% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.63. The average family size is 3.26 people [10] .

Local government

Recreation and Entertainment

Gainesville has a zoo , a historic train station, and a football complex with an area of ​​about 180,000 square meters.
