The village is located 42 km southwest of the district center (taking into account transport accessibility).

Name Origin
Valentina Krasontseva connects this name with Buryat haer - “steppe”, haere - “steppe place”.
Stanislav Gurulev believes that this toponym can come from the Yakut kyry - “distant”, “marginal”. He also considers the version according to which the name Kirkay can come from the Buryat hire , as well as the Mongol hir or Evenki kiri . All these words are translated as “dirt” [3] .
History
Researcher Jean Zimin expressed the opinion that the ulus of Kirkay arose as a result of the resettlement of the Hongodors from Mongolia . In 1874, the Kirkay ulus, where there were 28 inhabitants [3] .
