Description
The ecological station Murisi is located in the state of Alagoas , in the municipalities of Flesheiras , Mesias and Murisi [1] . It covers an area of 61.31 km² (6131.53 ha) [2] , covering one of the last fragments of the coastal forests of Pernambuco [3] . Established on May 28, 2001 [2] , classified as IUCN Ia (a rigorous natural reserve) [4] . The governing body is the Chico Mendes Institute for the Conservation of Biodiversity [2] . The purpose of the station is to protect rare, endemic and endangered species of flora and fauna, preserve and restore the Atlantic forest, and support research.
Most of the ecological station is located on the Borborem Plateau but the eastern sections are located on coastal sedimentary plateaus [1] . Height above sea level - from 110 to 580 meters [5] . The climate type is humid tropical [1] , with an average air temperature of about 25 ° C and annual precipitation within 2200 mm [5] . The rainy season lasts from April to August; the wettest months are May and July, the driest months are December [1] .
Within the ecological station there are many springs and streams feeding the river Mundau [6] .
Murisi is used only by researchers for environmental education. The surrounding areas are plowed under sugar cane plantations and pastures for livestock and continue to degrade. The ecological station suffers from hunting ( pack , agouti and armadillos ) and catching birds for captivity. There is a risk of cutting down trees to harvest wood and produce charcoal , stimulated by the nearby BR-101 route. Areas of permanent conservation are ignored by the local population, which cleans forest vegetation for agriculture [6] . Part of the problem is the lack of compensation to farmers for the land included in the ecological station [6] .
Biodiversity
The predominant type of vegetation in the ecological station Murisi is the Atlantic Forest [1] . In the least affected by human activity areas, located mainly at high altitude, the forest forms a fairly uniform closed canopy up to 40 meters in height, which allows you to maintain shade and retain moisture. Tree species include Tabebuia , ant tree ( Handroanthus impetiginosus ), Byrsonima sericea , Schefflera morototoni , Parkia pendula , Pseudobombax , Bowdichia virgilioides , Tapirira guianensis and Protium [5] .
In undergrowth occur palms such as Euterpe catinga , a plurality epiphytes and vines of the families Araceae (Araceae), Orchidaceae (Orchidaceae) (birth Dimerandra , Dichaea , Pleurothallis , Rodriguez (Rodriguezia), epidendrum (Epidendrum), Oncidium (Oncidium)), bromeliads ( Bromeliaceae ) (genera Cryptanthus , Achmea ( Aechmea ), Tylandia ( Tillandsia )) and Marantovaya ( Marantaceae ) [5] .
Some plants are used for medicinal purposes, for example, Ficus ( Ficus ), Lecithis ( Lecythis ), Aspidosperma ( Aspidosperma ) and Abarema ( Abarema ). Abarema cochliocarpos , widely used as a medicinal plant , is endangered in the Atlantic forest [5] .
Many species of birds are common in Murisi, among them are the rarest Philydor novaesi (probably an endemic ecological station [7] ) and Myrmotherula snowi [8] ; Terenura sicki and Slavonic tyrant Phylloscartes ceciliae are also represented [5] . Among the snakes is found the Bothrops muriciensis [5] .
