La Poste du Bénin ( Post of Benin ) is the state organization responsible for the postal service in Benin ^[2] .

Description

The company is run by the Ministry of Communications and the Promotion of New Technologies of Benin. Its headquarters is located in Cotonou .

Benin has been a member state of the Universal Postal Union since April 27, 1961 ^[3] ^[4] , as well as the West African Postal Conference .

History

On the territory of present-day Benin, the public service of mail, telegraphs and telephones ( French Postes, télégraphes et téléphones , abbreviated PTT ) was established on July 1, 1890 in Porto Novo . Subsequently, on December 19, 1959, the Office of Post and Telecommunications ( Office des postes et télécommunications , OPT ) was established ^[5] .

As a result of the separation of the Office of Post and Telecommunications, Decree No. 2004–365 of June 28, 2004 established the state-owned company La Poste du Bénin SA ^[6] .
