Ji ( Chinese trad. 戟 , pinyin : jǐ ) is a Chinese polearm used in one form or another for more than three millennia, from the time of the Shang dynasty to the end of the Qing empire . It is still used for educational purposes in many Chinese martial arts .

Ji was originally a hybrid between the spear of Qiang and the ge polearm . It was a fairly common infantry weapon in ancient China, and was also used by cavalry and chariots.

In the time of the Song empire, the name ji refers to several types of weapons, but the spears were the model for this weapon, not the ancient ji . One of them was named Qinglong Ji ( Chinese trad. 青龍 戟 , ex. 青龙 戟 , literally: "azure dragon ji"), and had a tip with a crescent-shaped blade on one side. The other, Fantian Ji ( Chinese 方天戟 , literally: “square sky ji”), had a tip with crescent-shaped blades on both sides [1] [2] . They had several methods of attack: side blades or shoulder blades, a tip, as well as a counterweight, which could hit the enemy.

Ji weapons have become popular thanks to the historical character known as Lu Bu . His weapon was called Fantianhua Ji ( Chinese 方天画戟 ).
