Camp Laura was established on January 4, 1992 on the territory of military facilities of the Yugoslav People’s Army in Split, which after the withdrawal of the Yugoslav units from there were occupied by the military police of the Croatian army. It housed prisoners of war of the JNA and the army of the Serbian Krajina , as well as civilian Serbs. After the outbreak of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the spring of 1992, there were also a number of Bosnian Muslims among his prisoners.
According to various estimates, from 1005 [1] to 1500 [2] people were placed in it during the camp. According to the memories of the prisoners, they were subjected to daily harassment, beatings and torture.
According to the “Yadovno” society, the top Croatian leadership was also aware of what was happening in Laura [1] . At the same time, it tried to limit the visit to the camp by representatives of the Red Cross . During the work of the camp, up to 70 people died or were killed in it [3] .
A few years after the closure of the camp, Croatian justice opened several criminal cases for war crimes committed in Laura against persons held there. On March 2, 2006, the camp commander Tomislav Duich and several of his subordinates were sentenced to terms ranging from 6 to 8 years in prison. Some of them, including Duich, have been hiding from justice for a long time. In 2009, several other former members of the military police were accused of war crimes in Laura [2] .
In 2010, several Laura prisoners received monetary compensation from the Croatian government for the torture suffered in the camp [4] .
