The selection for the Higher League 2017 season was held as part of the KiViN festival gala concert, which returned from Gorky Gorod , where it was held in 2015 and 2016, back to the Pearl Hotel and the Winter Theater of Sochi . This time the jury was Alexander Maslyakov Sr. , Alexander Maslyakov Jr. , Leonid Kuprido and Semyon Slepakov .
Already at the stage of selecting teams for the gala concert, participants of the previous season were eliminated from Syktyvkar and Ufa , as well as participants of the previous two seasons - “Best Friends” from Minsk . For the third time in a row, it was not possible to return to the Higher League of the PFU (semi- finalists of the 2014 Higher League ) national team, and as a result they became members of the Premier League under the name “RUDN University”. Among the teams that went to the gala concert, the semi-finalists of 2016 Chistye Prudy and the finalists of the 2015 Dagestan national team failed to return to the season.
Two teams tried to return to the Higher League after three missed seasons, and if the Raisa team Maslyakov Sr. invited the season into the second qualifying round, the attempt of the Nyagan Kefir team was unsuccessful [1] [2] .
Among the new members of the Higher League are four teams invited to the Premier League finals - champions and vice-champions. They were joined at the gala concert by yet another finalists, the “Without Preservatives” team from St. Petersburg, which they took in season with the other team from the city - the semifinalists of the season 2016 “Benevolent Roman”. Thus, in the Higher league for the first time two teams from the Northern capital played. Two teams that passed the selection season changed their registration - the Order 390 team ( FSIN ) now represented Moscow [3] , and the Napoleon Dynamite team, which had previously performed for Chelyabinsk , represented Tyumen [4] . For the first time, teams from Tver and Kaliningrad appeared in the Higher League [5] [6] [7] . The season also included a team from Azerbaijan , which became only the second team of the Higher League from this country (after the “ Guys from Baku ”). Having missed the season, the Georgian national team returned to the Highest League. For the second season in the Higher League there were also debutants of the season 2016 “Player”, “Russian road”, the National team of Moscow State University and MISiS [8] .
The gala concert of the festival was closed by the national team of the finalists of the Higher League 2016 , three of whom were taken in the 2017 season - the National team of the Big Moscow State Circus, Radio Liberty and Sparta [9] . Teams from Yaroslavl and Astana became the third and fourth teams playing the third season in a row after reaching the final in the previous two. Sparta became the first such team to play in the Higher League for more than three seasons.
As in the previous season, during the gala concert, the three teams went into standby mode, because the jury members had differences. These teams were the Moscow “Let's be friends with families” and the National Team of the Higher School of Economics, as well as the Ulan-Ude of Khara Maureen. As a result, Maslyakov Sr. decided to take all three applicants in the season. Thus, the season of the Higher League was extended to 22 teams, thereby breaking the record for the season 2011 by one team [10] .
In 2017, a new editor appeared in the Major League. After Dmitry Kolchin left this post, Aidar Garayev, the champion of the 2014 Higher League in the Soyuz team (Tyumen), was appointed new editor. Editor Dmitry Shpenkov remained at his post.
All teams that played earlier in the Final of the Higher League managed to reach the final this season as well. For the Circus Team, the 2017 final was the second in a row, Raisas returned to the Major League finals for the first time since 2012, while Sparta and Radio Liberty played their third final in a row. It didn’t do in the final without the debutant team - it turned out to be “Yaroslav Hasek Buns”, which successfully played their first season in the Higher League, taking first places in the 1 / 8th finals and quarter-finals. As a result, Sparta, the first KVN champion from Kazakhstan, became the winner of the 2017 Higher League season. Radio Liberty was content with second place, and Raisa and Bread divided the bronze between them [11] .
