Physical-geographical characteristic
Shtecknadelhorn is located in southwestern Switzerland in the canton of Valais on the crest of the Nadelgrat massif. The ridge connects the summits of Lenspitze , Nadelhorn , Shtekknadelhorn, Hyuberghorn and Durrenhorn (all tops above 4,000 meters high, included in the main list of Alps quadruple altitudes, compiled by the UIAA ; in this list, Shtekknadelhorn is located 26 in height [2] ). In the south, Nadelgrat is connected to the Mischabel massif, in the west it is adjacent to the Mattertal valley. Shteknadelhorn is located to the north-west from the top of Nadelhorn. The north side of Shteknadelhorn is covered by glaciers [3] [4] .
Origin of title
Shteknadelhorn has a very similar name with the nearby peak Nadelhorn ( German. Stecknadel is translated as “pin”, German. Nadel - “needle”). Both of them have the characteristic shape of peaks (a pointed peak), which was the basis of their names [3] .
Climbing History
The first ascent to the summit and its traverse was made by the English mountaineer Oscar Eckenstein, accompanied by local guide Matthias Zurbriggen on August 8, 1887 [5] [6] .
The classic route for climbing Schteknadelhorn is part of the ascent to the top of Nadelhorn. After climbing Nadelhorn along the ridge, you can go to the top [7] .
