History
It was founded by Prince Behan around 1388 and became the main principality of the so-called Temnikovsky Meshchera - the Genghis state of the end of the 13th — beginning of the 14th centuries. The ruler of the principality for centuries remained the senior representative of the senior line of Bekhanidov. The city of Temnikov , founded on its original site (before the transfer in 1536) at the turn of the XIV-XV centuries, became the new capital of the principality after the demise of Saraklych [1] [2] .
In the middle of the XV century, the dominion of the principality reached the source of the Sura, 300 km from Temnikov [1] [2] .
In 1506-1526, the principality became part of the Russian state with the rights of autonomy. The privileges of the “princes of Temnikovsky” were preserved until the beginning of the 17th century [1] [2] .
